I have an updated SqueezeBox and am trying to get a simple m3u playlist to show up inside the playlist section of the device. I created an m3u playlist in Winamp, copied it into the playlist folder that is configured in my SqueezeBox, and no playlists are showing up in the playlist list when I try to browse to them after I scan. The logs appear to show that they were improted, but for some reason it's just not finding them. Ideas?

Update (yet still no solution):

Still unable to see playlists, but I was able to browse to a playlist by creating one inside of my music directory, and then browsing to it using the "Music Folder" option inside of "My Music". However when I try to execute the playlist, it says there are no songs in the playlist. Both problems may be related.

The most common problem with importing playlists created via another app is that the file paths need to be consistent between the Squeezebox Server Music Library and the playlist - so if the playlist has as the path to your music files as "\\mediaserver\site" and Squeezecenter Music Library is set up to read "C:\site\", the playlist won't work when you import it.

Squeezebox Server has no way of knowing that the paths are to the same song that is already in your library with a different file name.

Luckily - there's an easy solution. A playlist is simply a text file with links to the files. If you open up the playlist in a text editor like EditPad or Notepad, and find/replace the path in the playlist from whatever it is to "C:\site\" (in the example above - you will need to work out what the file path is on your particular setup), and then do a playlist only rescan.

If you run windows, I have a small script which will semi-automate the find/replace process for you.

Another issue is if your playlist is set up with relative paths (i.e. the file paths start with "~" rather than the full path). Squeezebox Server needs absolute paths AFAIK (there is an open bug for this, but don't think it's yet implemented).

Thanks a lot for the reply. Actually believe it or not I tried giving absolute paths instead of relative paths and saving the file :). Still didn't work. But at least now I know that SqueezeBox doesn't support playlists created with other apps. So I guess my question now is: what's the supported way to create playlists? Did I just miss something inside of the SqueezeCenter UI?

Hrrm? Squeezeboxserver certainly reads playlists created with other apps.

The problem is that pathing has to be consistent, which is sometimes not the case.

Are you sure the paths are correct?

My steps are pretty simple. Here's exactly what I'm doing:

1. Open Winamp, create a simple playlist containing one album's worth of songs. Save to a location C:\source\playlist\someelectronic.m3u
2. Open the m3u file and replace \source with c:\source
The content of the file is as follows:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:316,Amon Tobin - Like Regular Chickens
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 01 - Like Regular Chickens.mp3
#EXTINF:356,Amon Tobin - Bridge
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 02 - Bridge.mp3
#EXTINF:394,Amon Tobin - Reanimator
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 03 - Reanimator.mp3
#EXTINF:431,Amon Tobin - Sordid
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 04 - Sordid.mp3
#EXTINF:389,Amon Tobin - Nightlife
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 05 - Nightlife.mp3
#EXTINF:354,Amon Tobin - Escape
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 06 - Escape.mp3
#EXTINF:229,Amon Tobin - Switch
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 07 - Switch.mp3
#EXTINF:364,Amon Tobin - People Like Frank
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 08 - People Like Frank.mp3
#EXTINF:312,Amon Tobin - Sultan Drops
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 09 - Sultan Drops.mp3
#EXTINF:458,Amon Tobin - Fast Eddie
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 10 - Fast Eddie.mp3
#EXTINF:316,Amon Tobin - Toys
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 11 - Toys.mp3
#EXTINF:282,Amon Tobin - Nova
c:\source\MP3\electronic\Amon Tobin - Permutation\Amon Tobin - Permutation - 12 - Nova.mp3

2b. (I verified that those paths are indeed correct and point to valid mp3s that can be accessed via my normal song browsing method)
3. Open SqueezeCenter from the tray icon
4. In the "Status" tab, switch to "only rescan playlists" and rescan
5. Note that in the "library" tab, my music source is c:\source\mp3, and my palylists folder is c:\source\playlists. I'm not using iTunes.
6. try to browse to the playlist by clicking on the Web Remote Control and go to Playlists, and there are no playlists listed. Likewise if I use the remote control or iPeng, nothing.
7. Go to settings using the web interface, click on the "Information" tab, notice:

Playlist Scan (3 of 3) Complete 00:00:00
Merge Various Artists (1559 of 1559) Complete 00:00:22
Database Cleanup #1 (16861 of 16861) Complete 00:00:14
Database Cleanup #2 ( of ) Complete 00:00:11
The server has finished scanning your music collection.
Total Time: 00:00:47 (Friday, January 1, 2010 / 8:50 PM)

8. Look at scanner log file:

I'm pretty perplexed.

The log shows that the software is scanning the playlists, so my guess is something with the format.

One thing I do notice is the case of the file path. Some OS' are case sensitive, although you look to be running Windows of some flavour?

Have you tried replacing with c:\source\mp3, not c:\source\MP3 and then rescanning?

Just tried... still not working :(. I wonder if there is further diagnostic/debugging information I could be collecting?

Using the web interface, Settings/Advanced/Logging - set (scan) - All Scan Logging to Debug and apply.

Then do a playlist only scan and check the server.log file (or maybe the scanner.log file, but pretty sure it's the server file you need). Any other info?

Remember to unapply the Debug back to Error when you're done.

Hmmm... that option didn't seem to yield any new info in the log :-/. So I set "(scan) - All Scan Logging", "(scan.import) - File & Music Metadata Import Logging" and "(scan.scanner) - Music & Playlist Folder Scanning" all to Debug. That didn't seem to yield much more either (and in fact I wouldn't expect it to since they seem to be subsets based on their plug-in name)... perhaps it did give a little new info, but I wasn't able to parse much else useful out of it. At any rate, here is the new scanner log (server log didn't have any new info):

(I accidentally pasted a slightly outdated log, but when I try to paste the right one I get the following:

"You have included 8 images in your message. You are limited to using 4 images so please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the BB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator."

Any idea why I'm getting this? Is it the ":" characters?)
