This question must have been asked and answered before, but I can't find
it in the archives:

Is there a solution for playing back Apple Lossless files under Linux?

I am tempted to re-rip mu CDs using a lossless codec (I'm no audiophile,
it would just make life easier transcoding music files for different audio
players) and I am tossing up between FLAC and Apple Lossless, but my
slimserver is on a Linux machine.

Any advice?

On Linux you definitely want to use FLAC :-)

Agreed. Also keep in mind the possibility (rumor? plan?) of FLAC
support in the Squeezebox itself; this would be a huge advantage for
playing lossless over wireless.
