View Full Version : Squeezebox Radio is stuttering during streaming

Hi all - I guess this is a common problem the stuttering during streaming however I have not see any helpful support document so far.

I am using a Netgear Wireless router WNR854T WPA and WPA2 enabled. Just to be clear I dont intend to change my general wireless settings on the router just to make this device work. I have a squeezebox boom already attached to the router and it works just fine. Is there anything I might have missed and could help to make this device work? It is a nice player but if it does not work properly during streaming I will most probably send it back.

Is the Boom also running WiFi? What is the WiFi signal strength on both devices?
Are there any other competing WiFi networks near by that may be interfering with Radio's WiFi?

They both run on the same wireless network and the signal of the radio is even stronger than the boom. there is no interference with other networks. Actually everything is just perfect for wireless playback. Is there anything else on the radio I can change??? Cheers Nick

Is the stuttering happening playing local music in your library? If yes are they WMA coded? There is a known issue with WMA playback.
Or is it stuttering during station playback (or both station and local music)?

To see if it is local wireless network quality - run network test under Settings/Advanced/Network test. Rotating the scroll wheel changes the speed being tested.


During beta WMA decoding had some problem and so the issue might be the audio format - in which case it would be worth trying some internet radio streams to see if stuttering occurs on all or just some.

What is the source of the audio stream - PC or internet radio ?
What is the format fo the audio stream ?

Thanks for all your help.

the audio format is either normal mp3 or Apple Loss Less which works just fine on my boom player but is stuttering on my new Radio device. Same for internet streaming (http://stream.radio1.ch:8000/128k.m3u) - works just fine on the boom but is stuttering on my new radio. I ran the network test but I dont understand what it is doing ... however the quality /strength is excellent( better than the boom ). Thanks a lot B

Have you tried using the wired connection on the squeezebox radio to play the same material?

Try going hard wired. If the problems go away then there is something going on with the network, even if it is just the type of encryption you are using.

Nick, I don't think you are being fair.

Connecting the unit to a wired connection is simply to PROVE whether the stuttering issue is due to the network connection or some other factor.

In the network troubleshooting world these type of diagnostics are critical for figuring out problems.

If you determine that it does not stutter during wired playback then investigation can turn to other things such as possible sources of wireless interference, type of network encryption being used, network parameters, etc. Any number of things could very possibly be modified fixing the problem.

If, on the other hand you'd rather complain and not do any troubleshooting then don't be surprised if the level of help you receive starts to tail off.

Three of my four SB players including Radio are on WiFi, no stuttering.
Temporarily running wired is just a quick test to help diagnose potential issues and determine where the problem may be occurring.

It looks like the thread has been abandoned by the OP, which is unfortunate as the problem probably could have been corrected with some testing.

My unit has never experienced streaming hiccups in the few days I've tested it on my home wi-fi.

ok sorry for the late reply - In the meantime I bought a new router and the issue has gone. By the way it also worked with a wired connection. Thanks guys for all your support / N
