Looks like a Boom with iPeng. I think I will save the $100 and not have to buy an extra Zone Bridge if I want to play my local tunes as I understand the setup. So again, buy a Boom, iPeng, and just load SBS on my PC for hundreds of dollars less.

No. You can use a Boom even without iPeng.
It's a piece of hardware that either REQUIRES an iPod touch or iPhone or a Sonos Controller.

This is kind of a weird placement: It looks like an entry product into the Sonos world, but then it's a 800$ kitchen radio for non-Sonos, iPhone or iTouch users...

Actually, unless you have more than one (or other Sonos technology) the system must be WIRED to your router. Any additional hardware will then operate wirelessly..
