View Full Version : 5.2 Scanning: Memory usage constantly increases

Yes, this seems to be the same thing that happens to me..... SlimServer has
just been scanning my files for almost 12 hours, during which time my PC
was unusable. Unfortunately I needed to use the machine so had to stop the
scan before it'd finished. (Maybe I'll wait until the next time I go on
holiday before I scan again).
My PC has 512mb of some sort of fast RAM, music files are kept on a two
month old 200gb Western Digital Caviar based on it's own port on a Promise
Ultra2 (133) Controller, processor 1.5ghz P4... and I turn off all the
services I can when I scan so I would expect SlimServer to scan OK and not
take so long all eat up all my RAM and processing power.
I use other programs that scan the tags and build libraries in the same way
I imagine SlimServer does and none of them give me as bad a problem or take
so long when I ask them to scan my whole library from scratch (i.e.
SoulSeek, Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, Ephod etc). However, I guess
SlimServer does scan the tags in the Flacs as well as the MP3s.......
I think only MusicMatch gave me problems of a similar magnitude (although
Windows Media Player was quite painful too as I remember).

Maybe it's time to install a copy of Mandrake 10 onto an old box and start
getting to grips with Linux.....
:-(
or up my RAM to 1gb (might be simpler, but may not work).

KDF. I do not really like iTunes and don't want it back on my machine (even
though I own a iPod). I'm surprised to see that SlimServer cannot select
more than one music directory and am intrigued to know why this is, as most
music library and file sharing programs allow you this option I think, and
I'd have though it would be trivial to implement.
Oh, and whilst I am on the subject, a browse button would be quite useful
too..... :-)

Why not use shortcuts?

When I was running under Windows I created a SlimMusic folder,
which only contained Windows shortcuts to the folders I kept
my music in.

Then set SlimServer to look at the SlimMusic folder, and it should
follow the shortcuts. OK, so it's perhaps not quite so easy to
setup as being able to put in a list of folders into SlimServer,
but it works, and also allows you to easily browse your collection
from Windows Explorer.

Worked for me until I set up my Linux server for the job.....
