View Full Version : 5.2 Scanning: Memory usage constantly increases

I've installed 5.2 on two machines. On one (Win 2000 indexing 50gb of flac
files) all is fine. On the other (XP indexing 150mb of mp3 and flac files,
512mb RAM, 1.5ghz PIV) the memory used by the scanning process just goes up
and up and up. I waited for 6 hours, came back to the machine and the RAM
usage was up to 460mb, CPU at 99% and machine generally unusable.
Since then I've done a completely clean install of 5.2, and tried indexing
just the flac files. This appeared to work fine (but I gave up before
scanning had finished I think).
Now I've tried scanning all my files again but the same thing seems to
happen... CPU usage for slim.exe varies between 87% & 99% (mostly 99%) and
RAM usage is constantly increasing (143mb after 20 mins and rising).

In case it's important:
The scan of all my music files (MP3 and flac) also includes Word documents
and other non music related files.

Two other things:
It'd be very handy to be able to select more than one music directory
It'd also be very handy to know when scanning has finished

Anyone any ideas??

using itunes will handle that, also shortcuts.

the browse pane in the web UI will show a message that says the server is still
scanning. when finished, it shows a summary of the song/artist/album counts.
As for progress, well, the only way to tell there is look at the alpha or
numeric pager and you will see it expand as the library is built.

not sure why the cpu and memory usage is so high. then again, I've never tried
scanning anything that wasn't 99% or higher of music or image files.

Hi Simon,

The memory usage will grow and the CPU usage will be pretty high while
SlimServer is scanning your files. Once it's finished, you should see
it settle down at a fixed memory level and a low CPU usage.

The time it takes to scan all your music depends on the speed of the
machine and of the hard disk and the size of your music library. Once
it's finished, you should see the size of your music library summarized
on the home page.
