I frequently browse music via my SqueezeBox and come across errors in the track tags. It would be nice to have some basic tag editing available through the remote - just to correct simple typo's, select a different genre, etc.

Would it be possible to change the play order too? eg. select a track in the playlist and change the play order position.

This one might be windows installer specific (I've never used Linux, Mac OS, etc). Would it be possible to add some context-sensitive menus to windows explorer, such that through navigating folders, the user can right-click on a file or folder and select "Slimserver ->" menu followed by "Play", "Add", "Add Next", "Remove", etc. If there is more than one player, there could be a sub-menu to select the specific player ("SlimServer->Lounge->Play").

This request comes up from time to time. it involves writing to the filesystem
where the music library resides, and is usually met with vigorous objection.
Slimserver leaves tag editing to outside programmes and avoids any potential
messing around with the music files a la itunes. Sure, its just small changes,
but it doesn't really stop there. What you can do is use the zap feature
(press and hold ADD while the song is playing) and it will ad that song to the
zapped.m3u playlist. you can refer to that later for your list of files that
need touchup.

there is simple move up and move down functions in the current playlist if the
skin makes use of it. fishbone and the standard skin have this. saved
playlists only have a basic editor, but it does allow simple up,down, edit, and
remove. There is an enhancement request for adding checkboxes to select groups
of file and for moving more than just one line up or down.

hi,

I'm new to the list... maybe this has been covered before.

When I go to All Albums or All Artists in shuffle mode and hit play,
the player freezes and says "lost contact with server". Then I have to
restart the server (stop it and start it). shuffling of single artists
or albums works fine, it's just when I try to shuffle the whole
library.

any info appreciated,

Let me add my objections to this. I definitely do not want
Slimserver writing to my music library.

I didn't know about that facility. I think that could work quite well for my needs.

Yes, I can see that I can do it from the web browser, but I meant from the SqueezeBox.

My problem really comes from the fact that when I select to play an album, and the album has a few tracks marked with different genres, the tracks play in genre order, rather than track order (hence why I thought it would be nice to do a quick edit to mark the track in a different genre), or alternatively re-order the tracks in the playlist so that they play in track order.

I didn't mean some kind of automatic tag changing system, ala WMP. I also wouldn't want any changes to be made without my knowing it either. And if there were options to amend tag information via the SqueezeBox, the option could by default not be enabled.

Hi Philip,

I did have some minor tag mishaps. Originally I used ID3-TagIt! (a free
high quality software for Windows) to correct most problems. Nowadays I
have iTunes installed, so I just use that one (I still think id3-tagit
is better, but itunes is convenient, plus this is the only way I can add
artwork to the files).

Peter

PS: I also oppose writing to the music library, the current best feature
of the slimserver is that it opens the mp3 files for reading only. This
tends to prevent a lot of nasty locking problems that would surely occur
with other mp3 managers/editors/rippers/etc.

I see. mis-read where you wanted to edit, the first time. Maybe file this as a
feature enhancement request on bugs.slimdevices.com.

I'm not sure it will be much of an issue, if bug #377 is cleared, as tracks within an album would then by default play in track order. Playlists will be much easier to create and edit on SlimServer, or imported from other tools, rather than using the SqueezeBox. It would probably be too fidly on a two-line display.

I use ID3-TagIt, but the latest version seems to have introduced some bugs, and the panel layout isn't as nice. I'm always looking for other software options!

I don't see what the fuss is about really. When I think of best features of SlimServer (I can think of many great features), being read-only isn't one that springs to mind! Almost everything that plays mp3 files that I own has the ability to edit mp3 tags. If a file is being used elsewhere and the user tries to correct a tag, the player would simply not save the change and display either "saved" or "not saved".

Perhaps a plugin could be added, rather than a SlimServer enhancement.
