I am going to be moving to a new house (possibly building one) soon and want to plan the best way
to do a whole house audio system that incorporates multiple squeezeboxes and is simple enough for
my wife and children to use.

I have been looking at the Niles Audio ZR-4630 MultiZone Receiver which can accommodate up to
three additional inputs spread among six output zones. I like this because it keeps everything in
one place, but have a question relating to how to manage the music if three squeezeboxes are
sitting on top of one another. Has anyone ever dealt with this situation? How about a wireless
PDA?

Thanks for the great community!

Doug,

I have a whole house audio system using a Xantech ZPR-68 as the main
switching point (8 inputs, 6 zones). It's very nice, but the downside
is that it's only a preamplifier, and the IR that it manages is
site-wide (so all 3 Squeezeboxes would respond when someone was
changing one).

If I had to do it all over again, I would use the Russound CAV 6.6. It
has keypads and IR, and most importantly, it knows what source you're
listening to, and only routes the IR from your receiver to that
particular source. Therefore, no issues with having more than one of
the same unit. It also has built in amplifiers for the 6 zones it
manages, so you don't need to worry about amplification (just run
speaker wires up to the rooms). Oh, it also switches composite video.

There's an additional feature that's really nice - for the first 4
zones, they have something called A-bus subzones. A-bus is a
technology Russound developed that allows you to run a volume control
and speakers off a single cat-5 cable. This is really useful if you
have a zone in the master bedroom, and you'd like speakers with the
same source in the bathroom. Instead of using 2 zones off your CAV
6.6, you only use 1, and get separate volume controls.

Take a look at http://www.russound.com/
