View Full Version : Help Request: Can't Connect to SlimServer Through Network

I have SlimServer running on my work computer, but can't connect to it from
home. I know what's between it and me, but my DNS King Fu is not strong
enough to solve this and I don't know enough about how SlimServer works to
know if it's causing the problem itself.

The details: SlimServer is running on a Mac G4 tower (Panther) with a static
IP address in my office, pulling music from an iTunes folder. At home I have
a similar Mac, which is set up to get its IP/DNS via DHCP over my DSL line
(PPP mode). My workplace is my ISP, so that's pretty much all there is
between the two computers.

I can connect to SlimServer from another office computer (same subnet) just
as expected, so I know it's working fine. Although iTunes at home does
recognize the SlimServer connection, it gives a message about a network
error and constantly tries to rebuffer the stream. SlimServer seems to
recognize the connection too, since in the Web control panel it valiantly
creates a new "Player" named with the IP address associated with my DSL
line. I note that that address does NOT match the actual IP address my home
computer is using -- 10.0.0.2 -- because of the DSL's PPP mode (rather than
bridged). Is that the problem? Is there a fix?

Thanks in advance!

I think that is the problem. Slimserver is probably trying to send
packets to the wrong address.

Can you SSH from home to your work computer? If so, forward port 9000
and tell iTunes to pick up http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3. Personally,
I use SoftSqueeze, which has SSH tunneling built in, to connect to my
home box from work (sort of a mirror image of your situation, but with a
much tighter firewall that thankfully passes port 22). I rate-limit to
64Kbps, which is not the greatest quality, but work only has a T-1 and
I'd probably get noticed if I continually ate 1/4 of it with my 256K CBR
collection. :)

Another plus: SoftSqueeze will forward as many ports as you want
alongside the SlimServer connection. My list is 22, 25, 143 and 3128,
so all my *ahem* unofficial traffic goes through a single secure pipe.
And Mr. IT just sees me listening to tunes. ;)
