I'm so glad it's working, but I don't follow you about the file
extension.

What was the complete file name before and after?

Sounds like the installer didn't unpack itself correctly, or the server
isn't finding the update files...

Well I'm stumped... SQUEEZEBOX.BIN is only supposed to be used by
older versions of the server. Current server revisions have the
firmware version number in the file name and that's what the server is
supposed to look for.

I remember a few months ago this method is how I 'forced'
an 'illegitimate' upgrade to new firmware without changing
the slimserver software at all:

Perhaps this kludge may solve other update problems.

FYI, I had the *exact* same problem as Karl: update would go until
almost at the end, then show "Update failed", then cycle back to "Press
and hold the Brightness key..." and freeze. Only a power cycle would get
it out of this state.

For me, the solution was to completely uninstall SlimServer and
re-install the latest nightly. I was already using the latest nightly
(tar.gz package) on top of the 5.1.5 rpm. I uninstalled, blew away my
tarball installs, and reinstalled with the latest nightly rpm. (Linux
Mandrake).

I had the previously reported problem of the slimserver user and group
not being created, so I uninstalled again, created the user & group, and
reinstalled.

At this point, Slimserver came up happily, and the update completed
successfully.

The memory leak is gone, but I am still getting short and long dropouts.
I'll post a more detailed report on slimserver-developers.
