Did you realize that your Controller has a headphones socket ? But the sounds comes through the speaker though you plugged in Headphones ?
Actually this is a know bug (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10073) which didn't get fixed for quite some time now.
So I decided to write a small applet, which would make me able to switch headphones manually via a menu:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/uploads/1/1f/Headphone-switch.jpg

Please note:

this applet is tested and working with a 7.3 to 7.5 firmware
this applet will install a new menu-item 'headphone switch' on the 'extras'-menu, which leads to the submenu you can see in the screenshot. If you don't see the extras-menu, you need to turn it on under 'settings->menu'
this applet switches to headphone in the moment the menu-item is used. There is no built-in protection against any changes that the controller is doing. So if you remove headphones and insert them again then the controller was in charge and might override the setting from the applet. Same could happen when switching music-libraries, turning the controller on/off whatever ... I just don't know.
You then have to go back to the menu to switch again.
BEWARE: going to bed with headphones turned on and your wife sleeping beside you maybe isn't a good idea as long as you didn't test for sideeffects. I don't know if and under what circumstances the controller decides to switch back to speakers :)

Hope that you will have more fun with this applet.

If you like this work maybe take a short second to donate to third party developers who try to bring you joy in their free time.
Use the following link if you want to send a small 'thank you' via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=ZXNEJ4HRZ3YNY (PayPal collects about 0.50USD from your donation)

By the way: If you face the issue, that headphones aren't switching automatically, before you use this applet, PLEASE take the time, create a bugzilla account and vote for the bug !
I think it also makes sense to leave a comment there.

7.3.x install instructions
==========================

open WebUI of SqueezeboxServer, there open settings.
go to the 'Advanced'-Tab, select 'Extension Downloader'
under 'Additional Repositories' add 'http://www.stagessound.de/bluegaspode.xml' and apply. It looks as if nothing changed, but the fun part now is at the controller
take your controller, select 'Settings->Advanced->Applet Installer', there you will find the 'Headphone Switcher'.
select it and start the install, your controller will restart and you will find the applet under 'extras'-menu

7.4.x + 7.5.x install instructions
==========================

actually you have to do the same steps as in 7.3, but menus on SqueezeboxServer and Controller have changed a bit:
Again on SqueezeboxServer go the the settings, this time to the tab 'Plugins'. At the lower end you will find 'Additional repositories' where you can add the URL from above.
On the Controller the menu-structure for installing applets changed a bit as well. Again go to 'Settings->Advanced->Applet Installer', select the Headphone-Switcher and then select the option 'Install'.
No go one menu up where you will find a button 'Install/Remove 1/0', if you press it, all selected applets will be downloaded and installed. Your Controller then restarts.
On the 7.4 firmware the 'Extras' menu doesn't show by default. You have to activate it under 'Settings->Home Menu'.

Tips for better playback
==========================
If you are not satisfied with the playback of your controller (pops, crackles) the following tips might help:

Try to turn of the 'Now Playing' Screensafer while playing music (you can configure this under the screensafers setting). This screen draws some computational power which should be better used for playback
Try to use low-bitrate mp3 first (192kB/s). You might also try to have your server automatically transcode the music on the fly to lower bitrates (if it sends streams to the Controller only of course). Go to the Settings-Screen on the Web-UI, choose the Controller and than audio -> there you'll find appropiate settings.

Great work on the applet!
The "automatic" headphone switching worked for me once or twice, but usually didn't. I voted for the bug quite some time ago. At one point I modified the settings to force the output to the headphone, but I like having the audio feedback on the speaker, so I reversed the change. Your applet is a nice solution. Hopefully you can figure out how to get it to work under V7.4 by the time I'm ready to switch version!
Thanks!
PS- I'm listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughan on headphones through my controller as I write this!

Yes, this is a great little applet.
I took the liberty of adding localisation so it would speak danish to me. :)

EDIT: And now I just realised that the english I have added is different that yours. Sorry I will change it back

Great, thanks.
I will definately install this when I find the time for it. I already voted for the bug. Actually this was the bug that made me create a bugzilla-account.

I made change to the controller described elsewhere in the forums, but to be able to switch back to the speaker for the system-sounds is great.
Is there a way for you to monitor how many times the applet is installed? Just to get some indication how many suffers enough from this problem to do the effort og installing you applet.

No - in the wiki there doesn't seem to be a download-count.

If anyone knows how-to we should get this applet under some sort of version control so we can make sure that we don't overwrite each others changes.

Funny how such a small piece of software can make your life a bit easier. :)

THANK YOU FOR THIS APP!!!!

Well, this is open source doing what it does best. I will not say much about my thoughts as to why Logitech can't get this working (yes, its a Beta feature... and it has been a beat feature for oh soooo long), so this is where open source picks up the slack of the manufacturer.

[edit: you won't need this steps anymore starting with FW7335, also popup-issue is solved]

For anyone interested in running under 7.4:

There is a currently a bug in FW 7330, which prevents the applet from running (https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13776).

As long as this isn't fixed, follow these steps:

- upload applet as usual
- download /usr/share/jive/jive/utils/log.lua
- find a line starting with 'local log' in this file
- insert a '=' so that it looks like 'local log = splog:logger("squeezeplay")'
- enable menu 'extras' under 'settings->main menu'

Currently the popups 'Turning Headphones On' etc. don't appear like in 7.3.3 (they changed the UI) but its working nevertheless.

Does this Applet make the headphonejack active, also when playing from SB???
Because then it would solve my problem, with listening to Internet radio through Squeezenetwork. That function is not available anymore, when I am using The Controller as a player.

Um - I'm currently listening to internet-radio via SN and my wife is lying beside me sleeping and not complaining, so I guess this counts as a 'yes' :)

The applet should route all audio-output to the headphone jack.

I just fixed all issues under 7.4 FW. Now all popups turn up in the new UI-style and I really like it :)
7.3 style of course unaffected, applet automatically detects firmware version.

Also this night a 7.4 firmware-bug was solved (hey this was fast!), so the applet will run out of the box now - no more extra tweaking needed.

Latest version uploaded to the wiki as always.

I installed this yesterday (7.3.4) It works brilliantly. My only grief is the tedious manual installation.

Thank you, Logitech erhm... I mean bluegaspode for making my controller work as a player as well.

Is this applet an embarrassment to Logitech? Yes, they are busy rolling out new devices and probably under a huge economical pressure making resources sparse. But still...

My only grief is the tedious manual installation.
I proudly present: applet can now be registered in SqueezeCenter and easily downloaded by the Controller (Ever wondered what this menu 'settings->advanced->applet installer' was for ? Now you know).
No WinSCP-install needed anymore :)

Nice thing for me: As I often switch firmware between 7.3 and 7.4 (which deletes the applet) I can now download the applet with a finger-snip ...

I updated the install instructions on the first page.

I'm out of ideas for further changes now, so have fun with it !

I just read a thread about turning off the button sounds on the controller:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67345
And made me think that it is quite annoying to listen to music, and have the button sounds on when listening to the controller. So my question/suggestion is, assuming there is a way to enable/disable the sounds, to turn off these sounds when "headphone" is selected, and turn back on when "internal speaker" is select? I personally like the audio feedback in "normal" controller usage, but find it very annoying when using the controller as a player.
And, thanks again for the applet which provides a reasonable solution to a long-time nagging complaint!

Mhmm - I'm afraid I won't be able to correctly sync. I'm still fearing that at some time the controller decides to mess around with the headphone settings.
Then if I turn off the sounds in 'headphone-mode' and the controller decides to turn back on speakers, we would be in an inconsistent state (speakers on, but no button sounds).

I also thought about a similar direction: if I have the headphones on (and walking through my home), I for instance want to turn off the motion sensor (if possible), which always turns on the lights and thus reduces battery power.

Have to think a bit about it - but first of all have to study a bit if I can sync to the controllers headphones changes (though they rarely work :) )

Hi!

I have just installed the applet, and when I am playing from SB, there is no music. Only the sounds from the wheel comes out. When I am using The Controller as a player it works fine with music, but I hoped that the music also came out, when playing from SB. My problem is that when I use controller as player, then I don't have the option to connect to Squeeeze network, and therefore can not play Internet Radio. :(

How do you get radio out from the controller???

1) main menu -> select player -> Controller
2) main menu -> settings -> music source -> select my SqueezeCenter
3) main menu -> internet radio or music-services

Maybe I was wrong in telling that I was connected to SqueezeNetwork.
I am connected to my SqueezeCenter but can play internet-radio anyway.
I also can use music-services like pandora etc.

Never understood why I'd need SqueezeNetwork, sorry for mixing it up.

That's exactly my problem. My Internet radio will NOT play, when I am using my ReadyNas as musicsource....:(, therefore I have to connect to squeezenetwork. I have had that option before(in 7.1), but now I don't have the option to choose Squeezenetwork when controller is selected as player. When SB is selected there is no problems....

Maybe you should temporarly try to install squeezecenter on a laptop and if even that doesn't help should ask official logitech support.
As it is working for me, I guess it's just some simple configuration or networking issue that can be solved by someone who has more knowledge about the inner workings.

Okay. That is weird. I must admit that I haven't tried to listen to radio on the SBC so I did a quick test and it worked without any problems.

But that is for another thread. The Headphone switcher can't help you there. It only controls the output not the stream.

Why is Logitech not capable of fixing this?

andynormancx
2009-09-14, 01:07
Why is Logitech not capable of fixing this?
They are perfectly capable of fixing it. The problem is that all their developers have been extremely busy for many months getting the new Squeezebox Radio and Touch ready.

They simply haven't had the time to fix the headphone switching on the Controller.

Let's not forget a couple of other things:

- using the Controller as a player has never been advertised as a feature, so no one here has bought it after being told by Logitech that it is a player, only to find their headphone socket doesn't switch reliably
- great though this switcher app is, it isn't actually a fix that the SB developers could use. There is already code in the Controller that can switch the speaker off, it is just the automatic detection of a headphone insert event that is unreliable

I'm one of the lucky ones, for some reason my Controller's headphone switching has always worked reliably*, since the day the beta feature was released. For some reason I also never get any playback glitches either, even when it is streaming FLAC for hours.

I don't envy the developer who has to figure out why my Controller is 100% reliable in and others aren't :(

* ok, I'll admit that half a dozen times or so it has failed to switch first time, but when it did removing and reinserting the headphone fixed it

bluegaspode

using the Controller as a player has never been advertised as a feature, so no one here has bought it after being told by Logitech that it is a player, only to find their headphone socket doesn't switch reliably
They are many (!) reviews out there who advert the headphone out. Actually its really hard to find a review which doesn't talk about the headphone out. I bought the Duet and would have sworn that this was an official feature!

Only after I realized it wasn't working I started to look on the packaging and logitech-site in order to prepare for complaining.
As you correctly point it isn't advertized there, so no base for complaining.

Nevertheless I still feel really disappointed.

great though this switcher app is, it isn't actually a fix that the SB developers could use. There is already code in the Controller that can switch the speaker off, it is just the automatic detection of a headphone insert event that is unreliable
This is right I just call the code which would've been called automatically when headphone changes were detected correctly.
Currently even directly calling the hardware 'tell me, is there currently a headphone inserted' from the linux-shell doesn't give the correct answer.
So either there is a bug really deep down in the firmware, or some controllers are just broken and noone has the guts to tell the truth.

The problem is that all their developers have been extremely busy for many months getting the new Squeezebox Radio and Touch ready.
As much as I appreciate this, as much I'm disappointed on how this case is handled. I recently tried a lot to help in narrowing down the problem - but didn't even get simplest advise on what to do next.
Now the bug is marked as depending on a private bug, noone has access to.
This is really disappointing for one of the top-10-most voted bugs.

If I'd only knew whether logitech is able to reproduce the problem, which is the first step in solving it, I'd be far happier.
Let's face it: tracking down the problem will be a real time-consuming task. I think this time will (or could) mostly be spent by enthusiast like me trying to provide logs if there was just some small guidance from logitech. I even started to compile Jive myself but was lost because there was no point to start from.

From an economic point of view I'm just afraid that there will be always more important stuff going on at logitech than to solve a bug in a never advertized feature for customers who already bought the controller.
This is a dilemma and I can only repeat my willingness to spent time on professionally tracking down the problem with the least time to be spent by logitech engineers.

I installed 7.4 this morning, and for all the reasons mentioned in this thread (headphone issues, and I don't like the graphics ), I want to switch back to 7.3.3. I re-installed this on my PC, and expected that the controller would switch its firmware back to the previous version (I can't remember the number). Alas, the controller did not switch back. It continues to run 7790. I still have the new graphics, and the headphones stutter. Can someone tell me how I can switch back to the previous firmware, and what the number was? I am not very computer savvy. Thanks in advance for your help.

bluegaspode
2009-09-30, 12:56
Actually here is not the right place for your question.

Anyway: under settings->advanced you will find an option to install a new firmware. If the Server you are connected to is 7.3.3 you should be presented a 6038 firmware.
If this doesn't help please start a new thread.

Maybe you should wait a day as I think for the audio stuttering a fix was commited yesterday for 7.4.1. I'm hope to be able to test the preview of this version tomorrow and will post my experiences.

bluegaspode
2009-10-01, 15:54
As some might have noticed, with the 7.4.0-firmware audio-stuttering really spoils listening to music on the controller.

I updated my Headphone-Pluging to ease the pain A LOT :)
If you reinstall it (version 0.2) you will find a third option 'Improve Audio Playback'.
On my controller now I only have very rare stutters (once every second song or so)

What is happening behind the scenes ?
Well - the plugins finds the process responsible for audio-playback and just increases its priority. UI effects like scrolling text etc. thus can't interfere with playback that much.
Please note that I don't know what other sideeffects this could have, if unsure just restart your controller to revert to the original state. Testing about two hours now - couldn't notice anything bad.

Thanks to bhaagensen for giving me the idea (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68815)

As a sidenote: logitech improved the playback with 7.4.1 which you can download as a beta (http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4). The effect is roughly the same - some stutters left as well but in very good shape to enjoy music.
The Audio playback process got 'realtime' priority there, my plugin-option then won't improve anything anymore (the changes are just ignored) so there is no need to use this option if you already installed 7.4.1-beta.

Sounds to me like the OS on the controller does not have good multi-tasking and thread switching. Sounds fairly fundamental to me.

You have to configure a repository-URL in your server, then your controller's Applet-Installer lists the applet for installing.

I've been able to install the plugin ok, and can switch between headphone and speaker. However, I am only able to hear the controller's clicking noises through the headphones, but no music.

I understand others have selected the controller as the player, but I don't seem to have that as an option. When I go to Choose Player, I only see the 3 players I have installed on my network and not the controller.

Any advice on why this isn't working for me would be appreciated.

I was enjoying using this - not often, but just now and then it would come in really useful. Worked fine under 7.3, became a bit obscure under later versions, but now Firmware: 7.5.1-r8826 it had vanished...

Wiki entries listed above gave me the solution. Although I've updated the plugins to point to the URL above, I don't seem to get the entry in the "Applet Installer" menu. However, the instructions to copy the files manually work well. Presumably I will need to repeat this each time I have a firmware update.

Now I can once again overcome this "feature" of the controller. With a small pair of speakers, the sound is reasonable enough for audio books or background music in kitchen, bathroom, even garden now that I've been able to extend my wireless network a bit further.

I just bought a duet, partly on the advertised (by the seller) fact that the controller could be used with headphones. I was dismayed to find it didn't work and read all the forum threads with a growing realisation that this has never worked properly. On the point of sending the thing back, I came across your app - fantastic job, works a treat. It's just a shame that 2.5 years on the bug looks no closer to being fixed. I've voted for it, for what it's worth.

Thanks a lot :-)

Don't think it will ever be fixed. Duet is not sold anymore by Logitech.
Where did you find adverts about the headphone features?
All I could find were pictures with a Headphone out ...

Interesting - I didn't realise that. I guess the Squeezebox touch is the replacement. I like the controller/player setup but wish there was a player that had a better output for hi-fi other than the Transporter which is just too expensive.

Here's the site I bought from (UK), you can see the claims in the description:

I installed the headphone switchewr, and I hear the beeps from the controller through the headphones ok, but I do not hear any of the content coming from the SBS

Is there anyway I could listen to Internet radio on headphones which are plugged into the controller ?

You need to activate the playback beta feature:

Very odd - I do not see Audio Playback in the list - only Audio Settings... do I need a special plugin ?

The controller firmware # says 7.5.4 r9408

OK - found it under Beta features... enabled audio playback beta,,,makes a thump sound through the headphones, but no Beatles :(

As of the description, you also need to go to settings->switch player, to remote control the Controller.

And reboot the controller.
