May be some more info about my setup.

P4 2,8 Ghz
1GB RAM
music stored on RAID1 array (250GB)
Win XP Pro SP1 with all latest security fixes
F-secure antivirus and firewall installed

Netgear wireless router WGR614

Squeezeboxes have fixed IP addresses
Server has DHCP address (set to always keep the same)

Slimserver set to use iTunes. I have 1000+ Apple Lossless tracks (and 1 WAV and 1 AIFF for testing).

One SB is wireless (60% signal)
One SB is wired
