OKay Im going to show my ignorance. A softsqueeze? is this some
sort of software implementation of the squeezebox?

Guess I should spend more time reading what everyone has to say.
I am amazed at the response I got to my questions.

Question. I have ethernet jacks in every room and also have wireless
running. I think I am going to order two squeezeboxes to put in
prominent location on each level of the house. Question is do
I go wireless (can it keep up with the streams or is there dropout problems).

Well... for what it's worth... I run 5 squeezeboxes here... and only two are
on a wired connection.

The other three seem to keep up just fine, and I've never heard a dropout,
except on the Kitchen one when I turn the microwave on (hardly fair... the
wireless drops completely when it's on - a laptop running WinAmp couldn't
cope either, when it was just reading over a windoze file share).

For the record... that's with a PIII 600 doing the serving. It's got a
reasonable amount of memory (512Mb), and runs RedHat 9. It does a few other
minor things - Mail server, runs Nagios for the house and local mesh, and
has about 800Gb of store attached, but none of the rest of the stuff sucks
any significant CPU usage. About the only time it's slow is when you make it
rescan the music archive, which makes the squeezebox interfaces run like
treacle for a bit.
