Choosing ShoutCast on Squeezebox causes connection loss

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. I am using a Dlink 713P Router
with 4 port hub/wireless/firewall already so are you saying that I don't
need a software firewall at all?

Linksys WRT54G can be had for $70 or less and provides firewall, 4-port
switch and 802.11g wireless. There's also free replacement third-party
firmware that substantially increases the available goodies. (I haven't
upgraded mine just yet, so I can't speak for the alternate firmware) The
good old BEFSR11/BEFSR41 should be getting dirt cheap by now. (no wireless
in that one), though I think the BEFSR still won't stealth port 113.

The two do different things, so it's hard to make a grand, sweeping
decision. Your D-Link, when locked down properly, protects you from
outside attacks just as a software firewall does. The software
firewall, however, can also flag and prevent unauthorized outgoing
connections (such as from a trojan or virus that installs a zombie
client). Windows boxes, even well-patched ones, are more succeptible to
that kind of malware, so the extra layer of security can be helpful.
But as you've noticed, they can make other activities difficult.

And of course don't forget that if you have a wireless network
setup inside your hardware firewall then it is possible for a
local hacker to get in this way. It's not so likely as a
internet connection attack, but could see your neighbour using
      your internet connection....

A software firewall on each wirelessly connected PC/MAC will
      help to pevent this.
