I am currently writing a quick and dirty (esp dirty) notification tray controller for squeezecenter.

It can do the following things:
* Use the running notification daemon to show the song title (as displayed on the squeezebox) on song change.
* Give a small notification-area icon that allows you to send pause/play/next/prev to the connected squeezeboxes.

It is written in vala using Gtk+-2.0, gnet-2.0 and libnotify.

If anybody is interested I can see about uploading the code somewhere. (Currently there are a 3 binding bugs in vala blocking me from releasing it, but that can be worked around).

I have added multimedia keys support (via GnomeSettingDaemon) and added it to launchpad:
https://launchpad.net/squeeze-notify

It will not compile yet, because of said vala bindings bugs. I hope to make a release shortly and it should work then.

Definitely interested in a small docking app for my gnome desktop...looking
forward to trying it out when it's ready.

I am still in doubt if I gonna see if I can hook up my Music Player Daemon client: gmpc to squeezecenter. a bridge application should be possible.
