View Full Version : Multicast for sync'ed clients?

I was playing a stream on 2 clients (1 PC, 1 SB) and noticed a
significant difference in where the song was at when I stood where I
could here both.

Also, if I use Ogg->RAW it becomes very clear that my 802.11b AP just
doesn't have the oomph to stream to the sync'ed RAW to both clients
(each client starts "burping"). Switching to Ogg->MP3 with a high max
bitrate and I can run at least 4 clients at the same time (NOTE: part of
the problem is one of my clients, the SB, is far enough away from the AP
that it only gets a weak link, but it is fast enough of a link to play
RAW data when it is the only client).

Question: What are the chances that the clients could have a multi-cast
reception mode when they are sync'ed? I'm sure it is a significant
amount of network coding, and I'm not even sure 802.11b properly
supports multicast, but if it did it would significantly reduce the 2
issues above and possibly others.

Question: If I sync'ed 2 clients, the server is only doing the decoding
once, correct? I am assuming so, but not certain after hearing the
clients play the same stream out of sync (for lack of a better term)
with each other. I am hoping that is just because one was an SB and the
other was a SoftSqueeze client.

At the moment SoftSqueeze does not sync correctly with hardware SB's.
Funnily enough I was going to have another look at the problem this evening.
When you play using sync with multiple hardware squeezeboxes it works really
well. I really hope the SoftSqueeze will work as well soon, but so far I've
not spotted what the problem is :(

Fair enough ... but I think the bandwidth savings with multicast are
still work being investigated :)
