When installing new nightly releases, is it safe to simply install over the top of a previous installation (and if so, should the slimserver windows service be stopped first), or is it important to uninstall first (and if so, will the settings be remembered or can they be backed up before they are wiped)?

Yes, it should be safe to install over the existing installation.

I tried installing over 5.1.5 with the latest nightly 5.1.6. I ended up with two entries in the add/remove program files, because of the version name difference.

I also forgot to stop my server before I installed, so in the end to be safe I uninstalled everything, deleted some left-over files after a reboot, and reinstalled the latest nightly.

Perhaps the installer could detect if a previous version is installed and if so detect if it is running, and either automatically stop the server or prompt the user to do it before continuing.
