Hi all,

I have the opposite of a problem.

After doing a reinstall of windows a couple of weeks back , when I now turn my SBC on it wirelessly turns my PC on which is fantastic as I wasn't aware it could do this. :)

How does it do this ?

I'm now used to it and wondering if anyone who knows of this knows a way to turn the PC back off which would be even better?

cheers
Grant

wake-on-lan... :-)
a plugin (srvcontrol?) is required to turn the server off...although if you have a modern PC that can go into S3 suspend state you don't NEED this - just let the PC go to sleep by itself.

It uses a technology called Wake On Lan, it sends a "magic" network packet to the PC, when the PC is in suspend mode it keeps the network card powered up and wakes the PC when it sees the "magic" packet.

You can control your PC power from the Squeezebox using this plugin:

Thanks for amazingly quick replies guys.

When you say Suspend mode do you mean just turning the PC off but obviously leaving the socket on as this is what I do ?

The PC was bought in the last few months so might have this S3 but would it be activated ie. noticed W-O-L in the Bios?

If this isn't possible , is the plugin you mentioned easy to set up and how does it actually work?

Thanks very much again.

Are you running XP or Vista?
On a Windows PC you can setup the power management to automatically go so suspend after x minutes (right click on desktop... Properties - Screen Saver - Power)

see here for how to setup S3 http://leadtek.com/eng/support/S3_S4_setup_Eng.pdf

If I set the power management up will this only switch off after total idling as I only want to switch the PC off if it's been switched on by the SB or is that maybe stretching it too far

For example , here goes-

I switch on SBC which then turns PC on, 10 mins later, kids start playing on PC and while they're doing so I switch off SB. I'm not wanting the pc to switch off as it's not idle.

FFhheewwwww!

I'll have a muck about with the options and get back .

Cheers for you time.

But...

Sometimes Windows thinks Squeezecenter is idling allthough you are still listening to your music. There are some special tools like the "Really prevent system standby" plugin to handle such issues.

I had some problems with windows entering standby or hibernation to early.

Mine has never done that... must be PC motherboard-specific

What version of SC are you running?
Use the plugin downloader to install it...

I take it I haven't the scpowertool.exe so I've sourced it but it's a folder with a few bit n bobs ie. source codes etc. that I don't understand , for now anyway. I'm sure I got it off a thread you were involved in.

Could this be the key?

Do this:

SrvrPowerCtrl can be installed using SqueezeCenter's Extension Downloader. Add http://srvrpowerctrl.googlecode.com/svn/repo.xml to the list of Additional Repositories in the Extension downloader plugin settings.

I have no idea why anyone would buy a nas...

Done!

Just had to put the scpowertools.exe which was in the download into system32 folder and that was it.

Thanks again for a great help , you're a star.

I can never get either of my PCs to sleep. I tried using msconfig to disable all startup items to try and isolate any items that stop the PC from sleeping, but it seemed to go to sleep every time when I set it up to sleep after a minute. I could have all startup items as on and it would sleep but it seems as soon as I run any programs it just doesn't sleep and there is nowhere that indicates any trouble encountered so I'm no nearer to identifying whats stopping it from sleeping.

It might be winamp but I'm not sure, and I use that most of the time anyway so not using winamp is not a suitable solution.

Couldn't get my Vista laptop to sleep whatsoever even with every startup item selected, although it sleeps just fine if I close the laptop lid.

Any suggestions?
