There is an executable faad which does the transcoding.

1. I don't know if it works on freebsd.
2. If it is supposed to work on Freebsd, then for 64bit kernel you need extra support libraries installed as it is a 32 bit executable.

The SC version of faad is included in the relevant distribution.

You can use standard faad but you will not be able to listen to AAC/AACplus streams.

If you want to build your own copy of the SC faad - the patch to standard faad for the SC version is available in the code repository.

Faad for Linux is included not FreeBSD....Anyone like to compile a FreeBSD faad binary?

Thanks

You can still do the pre 7.3.3 methods for supporting AAC as per the wiki and use mplayer.

What exactly did you have to change? I might include it with the next
SlimNAS release (unless I get faad working)

freenas:/mnt/Media/slimnas/usr/bin# ./faad
/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libm.so.5" not found, required by "faad"

:(

I'm surprised that worked as SSODS has a special build of mplayer.
I think recent versions of mplayer are "quieter" as older versions used to send text error message to stdout which is also used for the decoded PCM stream - so users used to get clicks in the audio.

I used mplayer that was native...not the one for SSODS.

That's what surprised me - to use SSODS command lines you should be using the SSODS special version of mplayer which redirects all text messages to stderr.
