AlienBBC Release 2.5 for 7.3.x and 7.4 is now available through Extension Downloader. This release has been in beta for a while and is primarily intended to fix bugs and ensure compatibility with SqueezeCenter and the BBC site. More details have been discussed on the beta thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60368

To upgrade from a previous version installed with Extension Downloader, go to the Extension Downloader page and select the new version.

Otherwise manually remove any previous version and then go to Setttings, Advanced, Extension Downloader on the web interface to install the new version.

The AlienBBC Team.

By the way, maybe it's not new, but I've just noticed that I'm getting thumbnail images with (some?) streams. Composer of the week listen again has a nice composer related thumbnail.

New or not - thanks for a wonderful add-on.

And one small wish for the future.

I "pause by hand" - I remember my position - stop the (listen again) stream, and then when I start it again skip to about my old position - maybe a tiny bit before. Any hope of that being done automagically in the future?

Displaying the BBC program "images" and the station logos for live (national & regional) stations was one of the small enhancements made for 2.5. These are best seen on Squeezeplay and SBC.

There can be delays on SBC displaying the image as they have to be fetched from BBC and in a program list this can be because many programs images are requested at the same time and sometimes the SBC or BBC seems to forgets to load/supply it.

The BBC images use a "wide screen" format which is displayed correctly on Squeezeplay and SBC but unfortunately on WebUI - they are resized into a square and so are distorted slightly.

I'm running SqueezeCenter 7.3.2 on Gentoo Linux, and just installed the AlienBBC v2.5-7.3 plugin via the Extension Downloader.

When I try to play a stream (for example, Guy Garvey's Finest Hour in BBC 6 Music), I get the following error in /var/lib/squeezecenter/server.log:

09-05-17 20:14:02.0497] Slim::Player::Song::open (341) Error: Couldn't create command line for rtsp playback for [rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/6musiccoyopa/6music_-_sunday_2200.ra?timestamp=1242602547&pid=b00kgg3p&BBC-UID=84883c5d89ce5d713df19c58f06007cf1114dc12e0c031 24045f69771236f60b&SSO2-UID=]

I see the artwork for the show on my SqueezeCenter web interface, but nothing plays due to the above error.

I get a similar error with every other stream that I try.

However, the following command works and plays the stream on my computer:

mplayer rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/6musiccoyopa/6music_-_sunday_2200.ra

Any idea what's going wrong and how to fix it?

Hi. For me AlienBBC 2.5 works great on SC7.3.2/debian linux.
I have noticed that, probably due to connection failures or timeouts, my machine can pile up inactive mplayer/flac processes over time. They take no CPU, but a little memory and I am looking to make the headless server as reliable as possible.
I guess I didn't wait for the TCP idle timeout, which is stock -at over 2hrs I guess. Will the processes go away after the timeout ?
Is there a recommended setting/admin measure to keep the number of mplayer/flac processes from bulging ?

I repeat, the plugin works great. I love it and I am grateful for it.

This problem occurs with some Linux distros and more recent mplayer builds.

Check out this thread - it has a modified mplayer.sh inpost #2 (make sure to mark executable after downloading.) which you could try to see if it helps.

Ron

Is this a new AlienBBC install or an upgrade from a working one that is now broken ?

Can you get a log (See WebUI Settings/Advanced/Logging) with player.source set to DEBUG and plugin.alienbbc set to DEBUG

1. Note time
2. Try a station
3. Copy into a plain text file all log entries from noted time until end of test. Zip file and attach to a post.

I turned on the above logging options and looked at the resulting log. The key log entry:
[09-05-18 04:46:03.4219] Slim::Player::TranscodingHelper::checkBin (260) couldn't find binary for: mplayer.sh

I checked /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/Alien/Bin/mplayer.sh and found that the permissions were as follows:

# ls -l mplayer.sh
-rw-r--r-- 1 squeezecenter squeezecenter 1295 2009-05-06 20:08 mplayer.sh

I added execute permissions:
# chmod +x mplayer.sh

I retried the test, and everything worked as it should.

Perhaps execute permissions should be added to mplayer.sh to prevent this problem.

mplayer.sh does have execute enabled in the zip file that is downloaded into your system - somehow it has got turned off in the installation process.

I used the Squeezecenter Extension Downloader for the installation; I did not install AlienBBC myself from the zip file.

Perhaps changes should be made to the Extension Downloader procedure to ensure proper permissions on mplayer.sh when AlienBBC is installed.

I think it may be Gentoo specific as ED works OK for Linux for other users.

Thanks! This looks like a fix (with sleep 6 - Geode LX 800 proc.)
