Hi Hugh. As a user with a large library, I have also
experienced what you are going thru. My collection is
~70,000. In the beginning, (around ver 3-ish) of the
Slim Server, it would crash etc.

There are 2 things to look at when dealing with a
large library in the Win environment. #1 is RAM. I
think the rule-of-thumb is every 1,500 songs = 32Mb of
RAM. I think I have that right, if not, I think Sean
has it quoted somewhere in FAQ what the RAM-to-song
ratio is. #2 is tagging and file formats. A while
back, I had to get rid of all my .WAVs. I converted em
to MP3s. At the time they were crashing the server. So
I would suggest getting a good tagger (Tag & Rename is
great) and rid yourself of .WAVs, .SHNs, .AIFFs and
any other non-MP3 audio files first. Tag EVERYTHING!!

Next, I would rebuild your library, starting small,
and see where your problem files lie. I would bet that
there may be some corrupt files somewhere in your
library that are causing the crashing. Divide and
conquer. Divide your library in 2. Figure out which
half is crashing, then divide by 2 again and again and
again until you narrow it down to the files that are
crashing your server.
