View Full Version : Svchost killing CPU with 5.1.5 XP?

Hi Folks,

I tried looking though the archives for this one, but I haven't found
anything that is exactly like this problem.

I'm running 5.1.5 XP, With about a 80 GB collection, and I have the server
set to start up as a service with the machine. When starting up, the svchost
responsible for LMHOSTS goes crazy, taking a sustainable 80% of the CPU. I
initially thought that I had somehow gotten infected with the Backdoor.Limus
virus, but a safe-mode scan shows system clean. After an exhaustive search,
I started to suspect the slim server.

After stopping the service (slim server), the svchost.exe for LMHOSTS
process drops to nothing. Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I haven't heard of this problem before.

Is the computer in question connected to the Internet? SlimServer
does try to connect to update.slimdevices.com every time it starts up
to check for software updates, which may be related to the problem.
You can disable this feature in the Server Settings area.
