Adam,

But there's no iTunes when you use Linux as a server. The cache database
already stores year information and since search/browse features are
selectable in the web interface it shouldn't result in a cluttered interface
unless the user decides they want the feature.

I think most of these things can be accomplished using iTunes Smart
Playlists.

I have smart playlists that include "Added in the last 2 weeks", "Year is
between 1970 and 1979", as well as "Grouping contains On-U", etc. iTunes
has some very flexible filtering options in the Smart Playlists, and it
also updates them automatically. Tell Slim to pick up the custom iTunes
playlists and then let it do it's thing. Presto.

James,

Slimserver running under Linux is capable of parsing the iTunes Library. It
does require that you run iTuens on windows, but very simple network shares can
give you access from both systems, and a few server settings will handle the
conversions from windows file locations in the itunes library to real locaitons
on your linux server. Recent nightlies, of course.
