Does the Slimserver software and Squeezbox support the new apple lossless

Yes. It is m4a format. But I think (could be wrong) that this gets
converted to high-quality mp3 for transmission rather than being
transmitted as m4a and decoded at the Squeezebox.

Depending on your settings, it could be transmitted as raw
(uncompressed) audio. I think the default is mp3 for SliMP3 or wireless
Squeezebox, aiff for wired Squeezebox.

This is correct for the current official release (5.1.5). In recent nighties,
and for 5.1.6 (when it is released) the default will be to stream at 320kbps MP3
for all clients. A payer setting (Bitrate Limiting) can be set to "no limit"
for any player that is capable of recieving uncompressed PCM. These would
include Squeezebox Wired, Wireless and Softsqueeze.
