View Full Version : Squeezebox glitches...

I'm a proud new owner of a squeezebox.

I hooked it up for the first time last night, and noticed a few anomolies:

1. When the unit is turned "off", the digital connections still outputs a
signal. This is a problem for me, as my DAC acts as a switch, and passes an
analog connection (from my turntable) when there is no digital signal
present. Since there is always a signal coming from the squeezebox, this no
longer works.

2. When pausing longer than a couple of seconds, I get garbled and then no
sound from the unit. (I've seen this discussed in previous threads, ~ when
can I expect to see this fix in a stable release?)

I'm running v5.1.5 of slimserver, and v.10 of the squeezebox firmware. I'm
using a wired connection, and I'm mostly streaming FLACs.

My SB is wired through the optical digtial out to a MSB Link III DAC.

On a somewhat unrelated note: I bought the squeezebox after waiting
*several* months for Roku to ship their soundbridge product. I became
familiar with the squeezebox through their info on the slimserver software.
I got sick of being jerked around by them, and bought a squeezebox instead.
I am so far, extremely happy with the unit. I wish I had bought the
Squeezebox earlier, I would have been far happier.

Thanks for reminding me to 'complain' about this also ...
.... I think that it arises as a side effect of a request that a number of us made
a while back for the SqueezeBox to output digital zero
when it was "On" but not playing (i.e. "Stop" or "Pause" or between tracks),
so that external DACs did not loose lock.
After this was fixed the SqueezeBox, as you have observed,
also outputs digital zero when it is "Off
- which as you note is a pain for people with auto-sensing switches.
I had forgotten to get back to this issue as my auto-sensing switch
(MSB Digital Director) is currently out of my set up.

Sean: Something for Version 24 ...?

I would hazard to say fairly soon. I haven't had any trouble with the newer v2x
firmware, but others have. v21 definately had the pause problem licked, but
some users are having trouble doign the firmware update, and a one second repeat
of music when stopping playback. The one second of music seems to be fixed in a
later beta release, but the upgrade problem still exists.

I really woudlnt' recommend attempting to upgrade unless you are really
dedicated to being on the bleeding edge and prepared to do some debugging. It
seems to be a bit of a roll of the dice right now. if you are happy with the
overall performance of you ssytem now, stick with it. The rest will come along
before too long.
