Why does it take so long to open wiki pages?

In Firefox, I see lots of requests being made, with slow round trips. I think there's a lot of redirects going on too.

I just opened the main page and monitored the network traffic in Firebug. To open the main page takes 70 requests.

It also doesn't seem to cache many of the static pages (.js, gifs, etc), or pass an if-modified-since header.

I think there is a bug open on this, but I don't have a link handy.

And yes, it's in bad need of fixing.

The load times will be fixed when our developer, Matthew Martin, re-skins the entire website in the next couple months.

He's already working on this, so if he were to go back and fix all the issues with our current skin it would be akin to engineering spending 2 weeks to fix a bug in 7.3.1 when the all new code in 7.4 that they are currently working on will fix the problem.

It's also just him working on the web code alone. We've made several attempts to clone him, but they all ended in spectacular failures...
