I use a directory hierarchy, as follows:

Album Artist/Album name/trackno - artist - track.mp3

Which tends to come out looking like the following:

Dire Straits/Brothers in Arms/02 - Dire Straits - Money for Nothing.mp3
Various Artists/Now 604/17 - Michael Jackson - Jail House Rock.mp3
