View Full Version : Slash (and I don't mean the guy from Guns 'n' Roses)

Hi!

Just upgraded from 5.1.1 to 5.1.5 on a Mac running OS X 10.3.3, and using
iTunes; and the first thing I noticed, browsing artists, is that "AC/DC"
have disbanded, and become "AC" and "DC" in the artists list....

A quick check, and all the artists listed with a forward slash have gone the
same way -- i.e. "Elgar/Walton" (for a CD featuring their respective string
quartets) are now listed individually -- although the same CD shows under
both artists....

I know this worked before, as AC/DC were always the first artist -- is
anybody else seeing the same behaviour? If so, let me know, and I'll file a
bug!

Thanks...!

I am seeing the same behavior with the artist "internal;external"

The group is listed under "internal" under i and "external" under e. If you
view the song info for either listing, it shows the artist as
"internal;external" if you then click on that link for "internal;external"
to browse artist it returns 0 albums with 0 songs by 0 artists.

No, this was an intentional change. I think the null character, "/"
and ";" are all artist separators now.

Perhaps the delimiter should require whitespace: " / " or " ; ". That
would make AC/DC happy. But I can see some instances (largely
determined by your tagging style) where you'd want to turn this off
completely.

whitespace would help. ID3 spec simply says "/" as a separator, but no mention
of whitespace. This presents some difficulty when trying to comply to a standard :)

The slash also confuses genres. "Hip Hop/Rap" shows up as two separate
genres. iTunes recognises that it's just one.

This is clearly causing more problems and mistakes than it should

I haven't updated SlimServer (5.1.1) since I first set up my SqueezeBox, and I can see that this is going to exacerbate an irritation that cropped up right away.

One of the first CD's I added to my collection was "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", and I found that this added 16 artists to my library. Some of these were combined artists, e.g. Alison Krauss / Gillian Welch, so that means with the new version I'll have 6 additional artists, most of them with only one song, and most of them artists that are unlikely to have additional songs in my collection.

I admit that there's an appeal to having Gillian Welch's songs from the soundtrack listed when I browse by artist, but these lightly-represented artists tend to clutter up the artist list.

Perhaps there should be a way (e.g. in a config file) to specify that certain slashed names should be interpreted as one word, and a way to "hide" certain artists (i.e. omit them from the "Browse artists" list).

I'd favor something where I could say "don't add artists with less
than <n> songs for some <n>," because I have the same issue...

But I don't see this as really relating to the issue of the slash as
separator.... I have this issue without the slash, arising out of
various compilations. Maybe the slash will exacerbate things, but
the problem is separate and pre-existing. Move to new topic?

maybe OT, but I've decided I like it this way. I have the same album, as
well as Down From The Mountain. Both are genre bluegrass, so I can
select them and some good singles by drilling in via genre, or select
the albums by sorting via album, or get some of these songs added into
other albums when drilling in by artist.

Got some GnR tracks too, but I don't listen to them as much :)

This is a serious annoyance. I have around 75 compilation albums (2
10-disc classical sets and 50 or so movie soundtracks), which has
increased my Artists list to well over 1000. You can imagine how painful
it is to try and browse through artists using the remote control!

I would love to be able to somehow filter these into a "Various Artists"
group so they do not clutter up my artist list.

The latest nightly release removes this "feature" and adds an option
that allows you to specify what characters you want to use to indicate
multiple artists or genres.

Just grabbed it, and AC/DC are together again. :-)

So, this is an official thread renaming. I would *love* if I had the
option to have all my compilation albums omitted from browsing by Artist.

Err.. and listed all together under "Various Artists"...

This is pretty handy. Personally, I found '&' to be a particularly
useful choice, as it stills makes sense (lexically) when seen in
programs that don't split the tag, and it also preserves things like
ac/dc. (Although, it did feel kind of weird to have to rename
"Siouxsie and the Banshees". :)

I did notice however that it breaks sorting by the "sort order"
tags. For example, I have an album by "Alan Moore & Tim Perkins". The
sort order tag for this (TSOP in id3 vernacular) is listed as
"Moore, Alan & Perkins, Tim". Without the splitting tags feature, this
shows up under "M" (as artist "Alan Moore & Tim Perkins"). With tag
splitting, I have two artist listings (one for Alan Moore and a
separate one for Tim Perkins) as expected, but they appear under "A"
and "T" respectively. It be really cool if the sort order tags were
split the same as the tag they shadow. If you'd like me to file a
separate enhancement request for this, let me know.

Anyway, thanks for this handy new feature.
