I want N because my laptop is N and now connected at 130 Mbit. Also my
upstairs controller seems to have a slightly better connection.

If you would need a new router right now because your old one broke.
Would you buy a G? Or a G that also does N, draft perhaps but has a
pretty good chance of being upgradable?

This is great for a laptop, but what would an audio player do with all that bandwidth?

Also my upstairs controller seems to have a slightly better connection.
Good, but this isn't due to the controller's wireless card, which is still 802.11g.
Boom (PQP3 - late beta, PQP1 - early beta), Squeezebox Radio (PB1 - early beta)

One, not much. But several at the same time...
Or an audio player sharing its bandwidth with one or more laptops...
Or a user who wants to run SC on a wirelessly connected PC so that each
      FLAC stream is transmitted twice...
