View Full Version : PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 soon (mainly for the Blu-Ray). One of the things that I noticed was the browser capabilities of the unit. Has anyone tried using the SC web UI on it? Any particular skin?

Jumping up a usage level, what I'm also really looking for is something that looks as cool as a windows media player system browsing through the albums graphically. I always figured that I'd have to get a quiet linux box with wireless keyboard/mouse and hook it up to the AV Reciever to do something like this but the ps3 will already be there...

I have a PS3 that is sometimes networked in a room playing SC7. Anyway if you type in the correct webaddress for the SC it does display but for me, connecting wirelessly the skin seemed laggy and there were some update issues. Also I didnt find a really nice skin.

Like you I'd like a cool looking skin for showing whats playing via a TV or LCD BUT that is NOT on the host machine. Would sageTV be the way to go I wonder....illustrated here http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817&page=86

I am sure this could be fixed. Maybe someone else had more success??

Well, sounds like I'll have to give it a try, anyway. Thanks! I will have a wired 1g network to the unit but I doubt that it will be much faster. Still may beat going to the computer. I wonder if a handheld skin would work well just using the remote to scroll around instead of a keyboard, etc. too.

The handheld skin tends to work better on the PS3 - the fonts and
symbols are larger, and the functionality seems better behaved as it's
less JavaScript-intensive.

It's not a great interface, though. If you've your PS3 wired into your
hi-fi/surround system then I think a better approach is to use a UPnP
media server (TwonkyVision/MediaTomb etc) to drive the PS3 - you can
point it at your same music files at the end of the day, and has the
bonus of also serving video.

I was planning on using my sb3 to actually do the music playing - just wanted the ps3 for doing some bigger controlling UI work. Would be nice to have a video server, though - I'll have to take a look at the software you mentioned for that.

Thanks!

Hi,

My squeezeNMT browsing interface is currently skinned for the Networked Media Tank but with some simple skinning would easily work on the ps3.

there is a bug request in to have SC support DLNA.

if it did, the ps3 would easily work with SC as a streaming device.

you can vote for the bug:

What I wanted was just the web ui to work - don't need the streaming, I've got an sb3 for that. Essentially, I thought it might be nice to have on during a party, etc. to display the album that is playing. Also useful to not have to get to a computer if I want to use the full UI instead of the controller from time to time.

right... i understand but maybe u'd like to have that sb3 somewhere else?

also, i'm not sure, but perhaps DLNA support would allow for some control as well? meaning more than just streaming the audio? maybe via ssh telnet/cli?

i'm out of my depth for sure, but i love the idea of a ps3 that acts as the audio conduit, and displays currently playing to the TV. the tie in to slim is that you would then use a SBC to control it. that would be a cool party app.

As mentioned SqueezeNMT allows simple genre/album browsing (at the moment) and controls the sb3 to play the album or songs. It would take just an hour to change a current skin. Though I don't have access to a ps3 but can very easily change the skins to work on a pc browser which will probably work on the ps3. The current skins will work on the pc but any changes of the combo will not as the NMT works differently to a normal browser with form information. All the genre links and album info etc should work though if you want to just take a look. I am adding this week amazon album cover pick up also when no album cover is present. I use it all the time on my lcd tv.
