That's not actually true - any gift with a value of 45 Euros or more is chargeable to Import Duty.......and the cost of shipping is included in calculating the value of the goods.

Alternatively if you know someone in the US, have them buy it for you (read: get it sent to them) and have them send it to you as a gift. Gifts aren't subject to import duty. If the person you know lives in a state with no/little sales tax then it's even better. as CA tax is ~10% (on top of the list price).
