View Full Version : Dissapointed - 7.2.1

I was running 7.2 and everything was fine...apart from the occasional hickups and crashes. Now upgraded to 7.2.1 and my system is completely unstable. The controller keeps lagging. I press pause and it takes 2-3 seconds for my duet to respond. On some flac files I am having audio drops which eventually are crashing the duet and the only way to resume service is by reloading it. Covers take ages to appear on controller. Unpleasant experience really. Very dissapointed especially as new software releases are meant to be upgrades. This is not the experience I am having...7.2.1 has created more problems for me than solved.

Is there any chance your neighbors decided to buy a new wireless-N router around the same day you installed 7.2.1?

As far as I can tell, 7.2.1 was the most trivial upgrade ever released. Not a lot of changes, so not a lot is there to break. Your symptoms sound like your wireless network is getting clobbered. The fact that you were getting hiccups and crashes before indicates this problem may have been slowly brewing for a while...SqueezeCenter is as stable as your network.

unfortunately my network is rock solid.

one of the things that really annoy me is that when I press play for an album (either from web or controller) it takes about 10 seconds before it starts. I am sure that wasn't the case before.

First, check under Settings/Plugins that you have no incompatible plugins installed now you've upgraded to 7.2.1. If you have, disable them and reboot.

If not, try deleting the cache file in Squeezecenter and clear cache and cookies in your browser, power off the Duet and the Controller, power off the PC and powercycle/reboot your router. Then reboot PC, once SC is running power on the Duet and the Controller. You may also want to re-add any exceptions in your antivirus/firewall for squeezecenter.exe, scanner.exe and socketwrapper.exe (if you have Alienbbc installed).

I think you may be running into either a firewall or ip conflict issue and the steps above should help you sort it. Alternatively, do a complete uninstall and reinstall of Squeezecenter (inc. deleting leftover files from the uninstall) which should force a resolution of the issue.

Are you on Windows Vista or XP, sorry can't remember?

thanks for the suggestions. Windows XP SP2.

Sounds like the kind of trouble you'd see if your SqueezeCenter host was in the middle of rescanning a (large?) library.

panos_k75
2008-10-24, 17:46
my library is big but my server is not scanning anything although I have custom scan enabled. could that cause the slowdown? there is nothing obvious in the logs

I would definitely stop SC, delete the contents of the cache folder and let it rebuild when you start SC again. What antivirus/firewall are you using? Anything in the logs for your antivirus program or in the Windows Event Viewer?

Custom Scan will do its thing after SC finishes its scan if you have it set for automatic scanning. You should be able to see if Custom Scan is doing anything by going to Settings > Advanced > Custom Scan > Manage Scanning (menu). It will show if one of the custom scan modules is running. A couple of times mine has gotten stuck on a custom scan and it took a SC restart, then full wipe and rescan to clear it.

Hi

What 'cache' are we talking about here ? Is it

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\Cache

If yes, is it ok just to delete the files in this directory ?

Siduhe

On a Windows build, yes that's the cache folder - you can follow a link from the Settings/Status page in Squeezecenter. Stop SC and delete the contents of the folder, then start it back up again to do a complete database rebuild.

I tried all suggestions...Unfortunately no improvement...I disabled all installed plugins but the behavior is still the same...For instance, there is a noticeable lag between the moment I press play till the moment I hear sound on my duet.

In more detail when I press play on the controller it displays that the corresponding song is being played straight away and the track timer starts counting, however I have no sound for the first 10 or so seconds. After this the track starts and the current track time on the controller resets back to 00:00 and starts counting again, this time in sync with the sound...I never had issues like this prior to my 7.2.1 upgrade. Nothing has been changed on my server configuration.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. Am assuming you've tried all the suggestions including re-adding execptions in your firewall/antivirus program.

Assuming you're running wireless - can you try running the Server and Network Health test (go to Help in the webinterface) and post the results here?

The lag could be a network congestion issue (and this doesn't mean you've or Squeezecenter has changed anything - it could be as simple as a neighbour adding a new wireless network which is interfering with yours).

It sounds like it could be something in your transcoding table.

What format is your library in and what is being sent to your squeezebox?

7.2.1 is running fine for as was 7.2.0

When ever I install I completely wipe the old install and install fresh.

Well I don't want to do that because I will loose all my settings, unless there is a way to back them up. My library is in FLAC and MP3. I don't think it's a network issue.

The network and server test via the web interface includes a test of the speed that commands are received and processed. Look under Player Statistics and Server Statistics (after you enable monitoring and press a few buttons).

I uninstall, wipe anything left in Program Files, wipe cache, full rescan and it still maintains all settings which are kept elsewhere. I don't use any non stock plugins though. I've also always ran it as a service.

You can back up your settings. The settings folder is indicated on the Settings > Status page, near the bottom.

this is what i am getting:

Performance Summary : Bedroom

Please queue up several tracks to play on this player and start them playing. Then press the Reset link below to clear the statistics and update this display.

Reset
Summary

Control Connection : OK
Streaming Connection : OK
Signal Strength : OK
Buffer Fullness : Low
Server Response Time : Occasional Poor Response

Warnings

The playback buffer for this player is occasionally falling lower than ideal. This is a Squeezebox2/3 and so the buffer fullness is expected to drop at the end of each track. You may see this warning if you are playing lots of short tracks. If you are hearing audio dropouts, please check your network signal strength.

Your server response time is occasionally longer than desired. This may cause audio dropouts, especially on Slimp3 and Squeezebox1 players. It may be due to background load on your server or a SqueezeCenter task taking longer than normal

Signal Strength
This graph shows the strength of the wireless signal received by your player. Higher signal strength is better. The player reports signal strength while it is playing.

Buffer Fullness
This graph shows the fill of the player's buffer. Higher buffer fullness is better. Note the buffer is only filled while the player is playing tracks.

Squeezebox1 uses a small buffer and it is expected to stay full while playing. If this value drops to 0 it will result in audio dropouts. This is likely to be due to network problems.

Squeezebox2/3 uses a large buffer. This drains to 0 at the end of each track and then refills for the next track. You should only be concerned if the buffer fill is not high for the majority of the time a track is playing.

Playing remote streams can lead to low buffer fill as the player needs to wait for data from the remote server. This is not a cause for concern.

Although the Slim employees do contribute here a LOT, as you probably already know, the best way to contact them is through Tech Support. I'm in the states and have had tremendous success calling and getting all the answers I need, but depending on your location, email is the other alternative. Or, I guess you could wait for a bit, but I'm never that patient ;)

Best of luck resolving your issue! Sorry that I can't lend a hand.

I have SC 7.2.1 installed with Window Vista OS, everything is working fine except the SqueezeCenter is not started automatically though i have set option (2) - automatically start SqueezeCenter when computer starts in SqueezeCenter Service Enabler. Any clue and hints?
