Hi,

On occasion when enjoying the forum I come across posts that include a download, for instance new plugins.

It appears that original posters are trying to keep the first post up to date with the current version of their work.

My suggestion is that any thread with downloads should have a resources post available so that any downloads etc can be found in one place. I would suggest either the last post of the thread or post number two.

Mike.

Not sure i see the value of this, most threads regarding plug-in's get edited and, as well as an attachment, should have a link to the plugins web/download page. What extra would your idea add? Maybe you need to be more clear?

I guess you are meaning if a dev post changes only at the end, which after a few more posts becomes lost within the thread so you cant find the latest version of the plugin??

When I update a plugin, I edit/amend the first post to include the changes and then paste the changes as the last thread of the post.

Seems to work ok, covers new viewers that start at the first post and people who just dive straight to the end.

I guess having an obvious place to stash the attachment of your latest plugin would help. Most annoying thing I find, is that you cant send private msgs with attachments, which makes collaborative working more challenging!

It is bad practice to edit previous posts. It's also a right pain for people who see the posts via email/gmane/RSS feeds.

If the first post is amended, some text from the original post could be lost. eg. a previous version of a plugin that someone may actually want still? I'm not totally against adding extra material to previous posts, but it would still be a good idea to include the download (or preferably links) in the new posts.

I think plugins should be stored on personal web sites and links placed in posts here. Any link to the web site from any post would then display download links however the author wants.

Also, don't forget the wiki. There's a page that lists download links to plugins.

I personally hate it when devs have one massive thread, updating the first post and thread title as they go. I would much rather they started a new thread for each release, with a date so you know how recent that build is.

The idea is that the posts and information don't change except for one post within the thread so "development" can be preserved, but there is one place for links downloads etc.

I would acknowledge that some plugin creators are very good at keeping things simple and do encourage comments and suggestions should be in a new thread. There are the od exception when the convention gets broken.

One the flip side, when there is one massive thread, you can subscribe to that thread and then get notification when it is updated. With new threads for each release, you have to always be looking for it, and sometimes life gets in the way of that.

But it's really best if the author puts the links to his plugins in his forum signature.
