Now that the headphone jack on the Controller is no longer silent (and should hopefully be fully functional by Xmas) I'm thinkig of putting some good quality cans on my Xmas list

Can anybody recommend a set that will (a)give excellent sound quality, and (b) not likely to drain the Controller battery too much?

I prefer the over ear type of cans but all suggestions gratefully received

Thanks

Depends on your price range, and exactly what you want.

Here's my top picks in the under $100 category:

If you want something sealed/isolating, get the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. They're well built, sound great. For some people (like me) they fit a bit too tightly at first, but after a bit of use they will fit like a glove.

I have a couple friends that enjoy the Grado SR80 headphones:

They're a good open-air headphone, but I don't think they're as sturdy as the Sennheiser.

I think a pair of earbuds would be the best fit...

Caleb has those and was raving about how good they sound.

Thanks for your suggestions. Having checked out some further reviews, the Sennheiser HD 280s do seem quite a good value for money.

I endorse the earbud idea. I have 2 Shures, one for business travel and another pair for the gym, for the latter I went for their "cheaper" model:

And honestly, they sound nearly the same. And they do a fantastic job at sound isolation, to the point where I stopped hauling around bulkier noise "cancelling" headphones for business trips - The Shures do a more effective job. Which can be good or bad. It has ahppened to me that after a while of chilling with the Shures on, I find my wife all flustered because she was screaming for me to help her with something. :-) Like I am a Doberman. Come find *me*. :-)

One thing you may want to consider is that a big set of cans like the HD280 have a higher impedance than most earbuds. Therefore they will not get as loud, unless you run a headphone amp.

The HD280's have an impedance of 64 @ 1kHz, the UE5's have an impedance of 13 @ 1kHz. An impedance of 64 BTW is considered to be as high as you want to go for a portable device.

For me a set of good earbuds will be a much better match for the Squeezebox Controller.

That's a good point. I do have a colleague with some phones around the same impedance as the 280s so I'll see if I can borrow his to try. I've never got on that well with earbud style phones but maybe it time for a re-evaluation.
