I have found it extremely difficult to tag classical music in any meaningful way without using separate frames for performer, composer, orchestra, and conductor. Classical music just does not lend itself to the artist / album / song approach to tagging that works for popular music. That is why I am hoping that the conductor frame will soon be supported in slimserver as another artist field in the same manner as the composer and orchestra frames.

I don't find it extremely difficult, just awkward. I try to fit everything
within a id3v1 tag for compatibility and it can be done - by using the
extra length of tags in id3v2 when required. It's painfully obvious that
the designers of id3v1 never listened to classical music, though.

If you want to search for conductor or orchestra, just search on the
album tag.

The downside is that you have to tag your albums yourself - the metadata
in the various online databases is not standardized and often inaccurate.

I have to say I much prefer vorbis-style tags for tagging classical
music but we are stuck with id3. Here's an example of how I tag classical mp3s:

id3v1 tag info for debussy_-_la_mer_l_109_-_haitink_-_01_de_laube_a_midi_sur_la_mer.mp3:
