Hi everyone:

I'm a potential buyer of the squeezebox, and a few questions about it. I was wondering if I need to setup up special permissions on my MP3 server, as far as creating another user account and changing permissions in order for the squeezebox to have access to my files.

Another question. Does the server software have to be installed and running all the time on the computer that's hosting the MP3s.

Any other useful information that a new user would potentially need would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Marticus

That depends on the operating system. On Macintosh, it uses the user's
account and permissions for the user that installed it.

On Windows, the default installation uses the SYSTEM account to run the
server as a Windows service. You'd need to make sure that the MP3
files were readable by this account, or change account that's set up in
the Services window for running the service.

If you install with the Linux RPM, it creates a new account (mostly for
security) that runs the SlimServer process. You can change this as
well, but it would be simpler if you just set your permissions to let
that user have access to the music.

It doesn't have to be running all the time, but it does need to be
running in order to listen to your music with your Squeezebox. :)

Luckily, it runs in the background and unless it's scanning your hard
drive for updates, you almost certainly won't notice it.
