View Full Version : How Powerful is the Headphone Output?

I've got some Sennheiser HD 600's and generally they need amplification beyond standard output jacks. Has anyone tried non-portable headphones and gotten good results? Yes, I know there are a lot of headphone amplifiers out there and that is probably where I should be heading, or a pair of portables with better sensitivity.

The output is nearly 1Vrms, which should be PLENTY of power.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600s here that I use with an SB3, but I never tried it on a Boom. So ... now I have!

It gets pretty loud. I tried "Slim Showcase:Miles Davis" from Best of Internet Radio, and it was on the threshold of being painfully loud with the volume at 90. With Alt|KEXP-Seattle I could turn it up to 100 and have it somewhat loud but mostly tolerable. Even with Classical WGBH - Boston it was pretty loud at 90 or 91.

In all cases, I felt that I could comfortably listen at volume levels below 90.

YMMV.

I think the HD600s work fine on a Boom. You'll need a 1/4" to 3.5mm stereo jack adapter to plug them into Boom.

BTW, I thought these headphones sounded pretty good on Boom!

P.S. I set the volume level to 47 for background listening.
P.P.S I turned it down to 43 once I heard a RadioIO commerical.

Well then, the HD-600's get to go for a ride ;) Thanks all for testing this out.

I think the Boom headphone output is fantastic. Music via the Boom and both my Sennheiser H2270s and my Sennheiser PX100s sounds wonderful.

I'd not listened to music via headphones for years before getting my Boom. Now I do it almost every night.
