View Full Version : Viewing forums using news/nntp protocol?

I'd like to participate in the forums and be more involved with the community. Wondering if it's possible to subscribe to the forums in a news reader? I use Thunderbird to read other forums so it's most convenient for me to add the Slim Devices forums to my current reading list rather than visit the web site.

I see the sticky thread from Dan (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=13565) saying that mailing lists and RSS are available. I already get too much e-mail and the RSS feed only seems to show the first post in each thread :-(

It looks like, from this old post (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=5734), that news/nntp may once have been available but I can't see any method of doing it in the current forum.

gmane.org does offer a nntp gateway:

Fantastic! Thanks for the pointer. Would be worth adding that info to the sticky thread too.

I use the email gateway. I use a different email address, so I can separate forum email from personal email. I use a decent email/news client (Forte Agent) that threads messages properly.

This generally works very well, except for the very annoying bug where non-unique message id's are created which screws up threading occassionally (more so these days than it used to).

I've considered switching to use gmane NNTP in the past if this doesn't have the same threading bug as mail, but news delivery is less reliable than email, and there's more of a delay in recieving replies.

There's an Addon for the Info Browser plugin that shows the last 20 forum threads on the UI (player and web UI supported). This displays all messages in the threads (although its linear not threaded). I thought this plugin addon received the data as OPML from the rss feed, so I'm suprised if RSS feeds only show the first post of each thread. I wouldn't have thought that RSS feeds would be a good way to interract with the community though.

BTW, I was going to modify the info browser addon for the SlimDevices news reader so that it displayed 20 threads for each forum, rather than collate the most recent 20 threads across all forums into one list. It also doesn't look at the developer forums. Is this easy to tweak, or does it depend on the available RSS newsfeeds?

Hey Phil,

The Gmane interface seems to be working OK. There is a short delay in
messages being posted though, I think it's a maximum of 10 minutes,
which I can live with for the added convenience.

It's a little clunky to set up as you have to subscribe to the mail
interface in order to post messages back to the forum. I'm using the
SSL version which I presumed would be authenticated such that the forum
would be able to keep track of my post count and display my account info
and avatar on the web interface. That doesn't seem to happen though
which is a bit of a shame, but again, so long as I can read/write in a
convenient way for me that's all I want.
