I am just about to purchase one of these. I notice the controller has a headphone socket and the hardware has a DAC. Does this mean I can stream my music to the controller and listen on headphones. This would be really useful.

Not yet, but almost certainly in an upcoming software update.

You need to install the beta version of SC (7.3). Take a look in the Beta forum for more information.

Of course use the latest releases not the one I indicated in the thread.

So if I upgrade to a 7.3 beta of squeezecenter how does this add a player to the controller - or does the controller automatically update its firmware to include a controller player?

When is the official 7.3 due?

Each release of SqueezeCenter comes with a matching firmware for the different players in the range.

When is the official 7.3 due?
Tentative release date of 10th December, so only a few days now.

This is tentative, so if new bugs crop up and push the release firther out then thats what will happen.

Battery life must be abysmal...

Most people report 2-3 hours. The one time I used it that long it still had juice left. That doesn't seem so bad to me, especially considering you can't use it far from your wifi network, and therefore not far from the charging cradle or your other SB(s).
