View Full Version : Remote Streaming: Constant Rebuffering

I searched the archives, but didn't find my symptoms.

I am trying to use remote streaming to play music I have at home at work and I am running into a problem. I can control the server through the web interface and start a stream, but when I connect to the stream (in Winamp or iTunes) the buffer fills up and constantly rebuffers and I never hear any sound. I am assuming that it is because the bitrate might be too high and I need to drop it for remote streaming (which I'll try when I get home), but might there be another reason? iTunes reports "Network Stalled" when it rebuffers.

Thanks for any help!

What is the bitrate? What is your upstream capacity?

I'm on cable and only have 256 kbps upstream (235 bkps in reality). 192
kpbs encoding is pushing it for me.

Streaming requires you leave a little headroom for ACK packets on sent
data. If you don't ACK's might get dropped forcing the server side machine
to resend. Also you need a server side buffer to account for latency so
that your server is always ready to send the next packet. The longer it
takes you packets to reach their destination the more you need to buffer
on the server side to assure a constant stream.

I'm too much of a n00b wrt to SlimServer to suggest configuration options.

From convert.conf:

mp3 mp3 http *
$lame$ --silent --mp3input -b 96 $FILE$ -

Replace "96" with your preferred bit rate in kbps. This is what I use
to stream from home to work.
