When I go to http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html and try to download the "Linux RPM", it sends me here: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/SqueezeCenter_v7.2.0/squeezecenter-7.2.noarch.rpm which is a 404 Not Found

Edit to point out that it can apparently be found here: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/SqueezeCenter_v7.2.0/squeezecenter-7.2-1.noarch.rpm

Darn... Looks like the bug I reported still isn't fixed in 7.2 (iTunes Plus 48Khz files play back at wrong sample rate). Oh well, I'll take the Boom for now and cross my fingers for a 7.3 fix! ;-)

Boooooom!!!!

Updating the firmware on my controller with Squeezecenter failed each time I tried, despite reboots. Solution that worked for me was to select to select a different player in Squeezecenter (I have a Squeezebox v3 and a Duet Receiver), before trying again.

had the same experience as andybjackson. SB Classic works fine, but Duet Controller wont upgrade to 7.2 (Message: "There is updated firmware available, press to download version ?". I will try the solution above tonight. Is there any other way to force the download of firmware 7.2 on the Controller? Maybe via SD card or similar?

I posted about this in the Linux forum. I've also emailed tech support.

What I'd like to know is why the Linux RPM is the only package with a 7.2.1 label. Is there something different? Or was the file just misnamed.

It is not actually 7.2.1. It's 7.2-1. That means its "Release 1 of the 7.2 version". We're merely following RPM naming standards...

OK, got it. I see that you've followed this convention with previous RPMs too.

Still, the link on the web page is dead though.

For the rpm just step one level up in the url. Directory browsing is allowed there.

I had been keeping my Squeezecenter at 7.01 and waiting for the official 7.2 to come out. I guess my usage model is not bleeding edge; my primary goal is listening to music so I prize stability and usability above bells and whistles. Nice to report that I installed 7.2 over a running 7.01 server and everything came up beautifully with no hassles. (Server is a headless XP SP3 box running Avast! virus protection.) It did kick off a rescan of the library which took about 20 minutes to fully complete, but other than holding down the brightness button on each of my two SB3 boxes, I had nothing else to do.

What is nice is that the "default" web UI is now usable, whereas the slowness of that interface under 7.01 had caused me to resort to "touch" which is a good deal simpler and usually faster. I still like to use Moose 0.67a for a really slick library browser, though.

This is good stuff: I hope that now the 7.x squeezecenter is in pretty good shape, we will only see small improvements in stability and performance and the odd bug fix; no more revolutions, please.

There appears to be a problem with the 7.2 release which is causing problems for some plugins - WeatherTime, for one. It has been stated that the problems did not exist with the last nightly immediately prior to the formal release. Can someone investigate this, please?

I upgrade 7.1 to 7.2. I use the classic layout of the squeeze center website and with version 7.2 the right side of the website is not showing anymore. Switching to the standard layout is also not working correctly. Anything I could check to solve this?

I love the 7.2 release, as it has truly made several of the issues I had with the controller far more bearable - wakeup is not yet perfect, but now I can live with it because it no longer requires me to turn the controller off-on every x minutes.

But with 7.2 running on Linux Ubuntu 7.2, I seem to notice that the SB3 no longer displays the spaces in folders or file names, a behavior I can't recall from 7.1. It s not a big issue, but I was wondering else notices that a folder that is named "George Benson" now is displayed as "GeorgeBenson" through the SB3 display when browsing in folder mode (which admit is my favorite mode of browsing music) and also in "Now Playing".

Note the song and artist titles show *with* spaces on the controller.

A bit of a guess here, but your problem might be related to some display font changes they made to accommodate the smaller VFD on the Boom, including fiddling with the space characters. Try deleting the fontcache file on your SC installation. It should be in your cache directory -- I think the standard Ubuntu location is /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/fontcache. Restart SC after deleting the the fontcache file.

I am deathly afraid of downloading the new 7.2. Last time I downloaded the "latest" version, it screwed everything up on my controller. I had to do a clean reinstall and lost everything. I think I will leave well enough alone.

I am observing the same "missing spaces" issue (although in truth, to
me they just look like very small spaces). I tried removing fontcache
and restarting SC, but the issue persists.

Thats obviously a very serious issue, did you try and find out what caused it? I haven't heard of this happening before, so it certainally isn't a common occurance.

You could try backing up your existing installation first.

The change from 7.1 to 7.2 is much gentler than the change form 7.0.1 to 7.1.

I have an original SqueezeBox with the graphical display upgrade. Starting with SqueezeCenter 7.1, I cannot find a weather screensaver that will display on the SB-G. SuperDateTime looks great on my current SqueezeBox, but shows nothing on the SB-G. Has my old buddy been left behind? (it's probably good that I retired the SliMP3, I suppose)

I have a SB1G and SuperDateTime and they're getting along great. I ran
development versions of 7.2 for a long time and didn't have a problem
(I've switched to 7.3 nightlies now, and it's still working fine).

I'm using version 5.5.1 of SDT (according to install.xml), although I
may have had to tweak maxVersion as usual for plugin compatibility. From
memory, I don't think I had to do anything else.

Actually, I didn't have to tweak maxVersion at all, but I still see nothing on the SB1G when turned off. (the power-off screensaver is set to SuperDateTime) I did notice that as of 7.1, WeatherDateTime also stopped working on the SB1G, though it still worked on the main SB (it's less than a year old, so SB3?). I did have to tweak maxVersion for that. WeatherDateTime failed to work with 7.2 altogether, in spite of maxVersion tweaks.

If it is a "small space" then I think that it is intentional. I think that the there was some discussion about the space character becomming smaller with the new font a while back - but it has been a while now. It is sort of a compromise, but things are not totally strung together and I've not been bothered by it, I guess.

In my case it is definitely a "smaller space" and not a "missing
space" issue. When I first powered it on I thought the spaces were
missing, but further examination revealed they are just much smaller.

For me it's not a big deal. If it's by design, I'm fine with it --
just wanted to give my input in case this was unexpected.

Lets see...

Mac OSX 10.5.4
Safari 3.1.2

It appears as if the CSS that controls these pages is broken in Safari. The Right-hand column appears below the left hand one. The bottom links, Help and Settings are at the top of the page. And that's just the home page....

That'd be a big surprise. Have you tried clearing your cache and restarting your web browser? You could try selecting a different skin too and see what that looks like (as it won't be cached if you've not used it before).

Not broken, outdated. Just clear your browser's cache and do a full reload.

I'm running into the same problem. The ReadyNAS server isn't my primary SC system, and I'm not even sure what version I was upgrading from; I think it was 7.0.x. I tried removing the SC add-on, but now when I'm trying to re-install using ReadyNAS control panel the "upload and verify image" process is failing, and I found a message in the logs saying "file too big". This seems odd since I had successfully gone through the upgrade last night.

Anyone else having problems with 7.2 and the Squeezebox 3 not displaying screensavers.

I have adjusted the settings to display Now playing when it's playing and date and time when off or idle.

these have always worked perfectly for the last 3 years since I've had my squeezebox and now they stop.

It's frustrating to have to press now playing after you start an album.

One last question, is it possible to go back to 7.1?

Hello,

I would not recommend upgrading to SC 7.2. In my case, SC 7.2 is unable to play Apple Lossless files, i.e. my whole music library. iTunes scan can't find 6.000 of my 16.000 tracks, without useful information in the scanner log. Display is not updated correctly when tracks are selected during play.

It would certainly take me a day to document all the bugs.

I found a fix for one bug (#9420), and now I am tired.

Where can I find 7.1 or 6.5.4 for Ubuntu to downgrade until 7.3 is released?

Mercy!

Hello Mitch,

Do you run SC 7.2 under Ubuntu? Do you have Apple lossless files? Do they play correctly? If not please do not assert there is no problem with Apple lossless files under Ubuntu (and probably Linux in general), people might take your word for it, upgrade and not be able to play their music (like me at my party on Friday night). According to the forums (and the SC code) I am not the only one to experience the problem.

Simply, I am not lucky enough to be in your situation. Good for you, tough for me.

JC.

I was really just responding to your comment that said "I would not
recommend upgrading to SC 7.2". To me that sounded like a blanket
indictment of the release, and I merely wanted to point out that it
isn't broken for everyone.

My library is primarily FLAC and MP3, with some WMA and M4A mixed in.
With that library, under Ubuntu, with the SC 7.2 release, I have had
no problems.

I would never recommend an update prior to something like a party,
though -- there's always a risk in updating, even though (in my
experience) they're usually painless.

I've recently upgraded to SC v7.2. The upgrade went fine and I re-scanned etc... without issues. But I have noticed an odd behaviour just recently. When using the web interface (with Fishbone skin), when playing tracks back from a playlist, the displayed Artist info is not always updated properly (it would still show as the previous artist) when moving to the next song and the Album info would be updated correctly but clicking on the link would actually take me to the previously played album listing. A reload of the web page sets everything properly.

On top of all this, this behaviour seems to come and go - ie: not 100% repeatable. I'll have to see if does the same thing with the stock skin. I've cleared my cache etc... to see if that fixes it but it does not.

Has anyone else observed this? Very strange.

EDIT: This seems to only be an issue when using the Fishbone skin.

Infos about downgrading SqueezeCenter on Ubuntu anyone?

All the old versions you could ever want are here:

I'm another happy 7.2 ubuntu user, but I'm not using Apple Lossless either!

"Anyone else having problems with 7.2 and the Squeezebox 3 not displaying screensavers."

My bbc ticker streams without any problem, but WeatherTime won't work. I got it working fine under 7.1 by modifying the install file (after Martin, the author was good enough to point me to what to change), but despite making a similar ammendment for 7.2 I can't make it work.

Strangely, if I go to the Extras menu on the SB, it shows up, but when I get the screen "Click PLAY" to run it and hit the play button, nothing happens.

i have an original SB3 and was previously using slimserver 6.5.4. i "upgraded" to squeezecenter 7.2. all my music is in .wav format on an external hard drive. i used a program called tag&rename to enter metadata for the .wav files (5099 of them). after installing 7.2, the SB3/squeezecenter combo won't recognize any of the info. i'm left with one artist (No Artist) and one album (No Album) that encompasses my entire collection. that is absolutely ridiculous. i tried squeezecenter 7.1 but it was slow and buggy so i reverted back to 6.5.4. it appears i will have to do the same again.

i had intended to purchase a transporter within the next year. somebody please tell me i can use the transporter with slimserver 6.5.4 as it appears to be the only stable software that's been released.

****EDIT****

ok, i tried to install 7.1 over 7.2 and still had the same problem. i did a complete uninstall and loaded 7.0. it appears that all the .wav tags are back and functioning properly. i might try loading 7.2 on top of 7.0 and see if the tags follow later in the week when i have more time to deal with whatever problems will arise from doing so.

According to the official chart, you are in luck - Transporter minimum software is 6.5. However there have been quite a few firmware changes so I'd recommend the latest.

IMHO the problem with your tags is that, by tagging WAV files, you are pushing the limits of normal use, and shouldn't be surprised if things go wrong sometimes. If you are in a very small minority of users - and in the absence of real data I just surmise that you are - then errors are much less likely to be found in beta testing and will be slower to be fixed once found. That's assuming that it really is a "bug" - you're also operating away from any defined standards (ok, there aren't many of these in the world of tagging anyway but...).

Normal usage is to tag FLAC (or other losslessly compressed) files (or of course MP3 but we won't go there). Try that?

Ceejay.

I upgraded from Squeezecenter 7.0.to 7.2 yesterday. I found that 7.2 had difficulty starting up when I switched on my PC (using Windows Vista Home Premium). I had not experienced this difficulty with version 7.0. I uninstalled 7.2 and tried again but still found that start up was erratic so I've gone back to version 7.0. which starts up without problem. I report this for what it is worth.

Could you please upload the server.log file? 7.2 should start up just fine. If you're using a firewall, you might need to tell it about the new version of squeezecenter.exe.

i appreciate your input. i'm glad to know that the transporter will work with 6.5.4. right now it appears that squeezecenter 7.0 is working well so i may just leave well enough alone.

i realize that tagging wavs is not the standard and leaves me in a small minority, but i'm just not ready to jump on the flac bandwagon. with storage as cheap as it is, i'd prefer to leave the music uncompressed and not have to worry about sonic degradation from compression/uncompression.

Sonic degradation from compression and uncompression? It's lossless.
There is no degradation. Do you avoid downloading zip files and
compressed executables as well? :)

are you saying you are worried by sonic degradation of decompressing FLAC? - because there isn't any.

Mathematically (and practically), the degradation is zero. If you compress a wav file using a lossless algorithm like flac, and then uncompress it again, the audio bits will be 100% identical to the original wav.

kgturner
2008-09-15, 11:24
i've read all the arguments before about flac being the equivalent wav. i'm not going to say one is the better than the other in regard to sound quality. but for me, my peace of mind, and my money, i'd rather go completely uncompressed than lossless. my entire cd collection that's taken me decades to amass (plus my wife's) only encompasses half of a 500GB hard drive. you know...better safe than sorry.

i've read all the arguments before about flac being the equivalent wav.

They aren't arguments or theories, they are scientific/mathematical facts or explanations. That's like saying that you've heard all the arguments that two nickels (USD $0.05) have the same value as a dime (USD $0.10) but you'll keep your two nickels instead just to be safe. :)

You're certainly and obviously free to keep your files as wav though. And I agree that if wav tags used to work in older SC versions, then it is reasonable to expect them to continue to work in newer versions.

You need to install a new version of AlienBBC (assuming you did not upgrade from 7.1).

There is a new release 2.02 which includes all the menu changes relating to iPlayer.

Shoutcast does not work anymore

Hi,

After the upgrade to SC7.2 all shoutcast/radiotime streams do not work anymore. The Duet controller states; No items found in playlist. (also showing an url) Is this a known bug?

Downloaded v. 7.2 to my MacMini (OSX 10.5.5) and it works fine. Only thing is that it is still loading after 20 minutes. On the bottom of my Safari window, the message says: Loading 'http://localhost:9000/", completed X of X items. How long is it supposed to do that?

Also, on my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.5.5), same thing was happening in Safari, only it says there are three errors, so I closed out the SlimCenter window.

I upgraded from 7.0 to 7.2. My squeeze box works just fine. My Transport will not stream anything. I can find tracks and get all the tags displayed, remaining time etc, but nothing is streamed. Same with internet radio staions.

I went back to 7.0 and both the squeezebox and transporter work just fine.

Help!

Hi All,

After using 7.2 for some weeks, i noticed one annoying problem :
-with browser selecting 'music collection'
-selecting 'genres' to show all the genres in the DB
-selecting a genre to show the albums belonging to this genre
-select 'all albums' which should show the album-art/titles only from this genre.

With 7.2 it shows all albums of all genres !!!

As far as i remember this does not happen in 7.1.xxx an earlier.
The URL as copied from the page, does seem to include a specifier for genre :

http://192.168.1.1:9000/browsedb.html?hierarchy=genre,contributor,album,tr ack&artwork=1&level=2&genre.id=10&player=00%3A04%3A20%3A12%3A03%3A11

Am i missing something, or is the query broken ?

I lost power the other night and when I rebooted it all I ended up getting the latest firmware on my SB3 and then needed to load SC 7.2 on my ReadyNAS.

This sucks! It has trouble finding my music folder and is slow as can be.

I was running firmware version 52 prior and a similar ancient SlimServer.

I want to go back. This is not an improvement, it is JUNK. What's wrong with these people?

My files are mostly WAV or Apple Lossless.

The link to the old stuff doesn't go back far enough for me.

Any other sites have the old stuff?

I've been having SC 7.2 problems, too... I had 7.2 installed for a week or so. Something would happen quite frequently (not sure what) and the Squeezebox would go completely blank (I think it was a wireless network drop) and have difficulty coming back. Pushing a button on the remote brought up the "Connecting to wireless network" status message and it just stayed there for awhile.

Back to 7.1 and everything is fine... I've been using 6.5, 7.0, 7.1 without problems like this.
