View Full Version : Where is the Controller firmware located now?

2008-08-01, 13:31
As my Conroller refuses to update firmware wirelessly, I've had to resort to the SD card method. The firmware was always located in /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache but after moving from the testing to the main repository and downgrading to 7.1 it seems this is no longer the case.

Can someone in the know please advise where said firmware has been relocated to in the 7.1 main build?

? for some reason they have removed almost all jive.bin's from
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly ??

For some time during the 7.1 beta you could always pick different Jive.bin from the site ??

In my recent build of 7.2 it is where you expect it:
mikael@mikael:~$ ssh root@
root@'s password:
Last login: Sat Aug 2 17:33:49 2008 from
[root@hal ~]# cd /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache
[root@hal cache]# ls
Artwork jive.version plugin-data.yaml
cookies.dat mDNS.conf squeezecenter-mysql.pid
FileCache my.cnf squeezecenter-mysql.sock
fontcache MySQL stringcache
jive_7.1_r2722.bin mysql-error-log.txt templates
[root@hal cache]# "

Just take the jive_7.1_r2722.bin rename to jive.bin and put on SD card

The jive.bin is 9.2mb so i could not uppload to this tread, i could email if you provide me with an address via pm

I think this is the same version that goes with the latest 7.1 ?
You should at least have a jive version file telling what version SqueezeCenter expect ?

? now i searched trough the whole downloads i can only find one jive ??? ! huh ?

in http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SqueezeCenter_v7.0.0/

but this one is certainly to old...

This is strange..

you'll find firmware images at http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/

But this doesn't answer your questions where they're stored on your machine and why they stopped comming. Latest version in my cache (as displayed by settings->status->Cache Folder) ist r2722.

I copy firmware images to controller://mnt/mmc/jive.bin and then use the "update from sd-card" function.

This must be the must secret site ever, lots of these things with no obvious links to them..
Thanks for the info i bookmarked it for further reference.

hove about making things browsable ?

This is the address (or the one a few lines below) SC queries for new SBC images. Sometimes when there's a new SC version number the appropriate directory doesn't exist on the update server yet and then you'll see messages like those:

Firmware: Failed to download http://update.squeezenetwork.com/update/firmware/7.1/jive.version

So this site is not inofficial but more non-public as the code can change and SC will query another address then.

The URL/file mentioned above contains "7.1 r2722", so this answers the question to the last available/pushed out version, too.

There's no .bin file to be seen, yet the Controller is working...(well, when it doesn't decide to lose the connection to the server anyhow)? According to the Controller it's running 7.1 r2435. Presumably 7.1 r2749.bin won't cause any issues?

2008-08-03, 01:19

I'd suggest looking for network issues (firewall, dns, ...). I suppose you don't see anything helpful in the logs?

Regarding 7.1 r2749.bin i've used this version without problems (currently playing with 7.2 ;-)

There's no firewall in play here and the only DNS is that on my broadband router, which is a different IP range to that of my audio devices, which aren't internet facing. I'll update to the latest firmware and see where that takes me.

The controller has some bizarre problems working with perfectly ordinary wireless networks - there's got to be something in the Controller firmware that trips it up when connecting to a large number of routers, there are too many people with problems for it to always be a router issue.

I'm waiting for a replacement Controller (dodgey "<<" button on my first) and if that doesn't work with my router then I'll get a refund, the lack of concern about these Controller connectivity issues that are continuously being reported here is quite telling IMHO.

Today I upgraded to the latest 7.1 stable release. The handset keeps complaining on not being able to upgrade. The logs show:

[08-08-03 15:02:10.4741] Slim::Utils::Firmware::downloadAsyncError (500) Warning: Firmware: Failed to download http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.1/jive_7.1_r2722.bin.sha (Validation of firmware C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\Cache\jive_7.1_r2722.bin failed, SHA1 checksum did not match), will try again in 10 minutes.

Any ideas?
