Hi Everyone

I have been really enjoying my SB-Classic plugged into stereo system. I figured that I would plug the SB-Classic into the back of my Linn AV5103 preamp digitally (at full volume) and just use the volume control on the preamp. This has all worked fine for my CDs ripped as FLAC (I guess with 44.1kHz 16bit data inside)

Anyway - I found a nice little utility for converting HDCD based files into 44.1kHz 24bit files (although only 20bits of data are used). I only have 3 or 4 HDCDs.
The link to the post is here:

The HDCD utility can be found here:

The AV5103 cannot decode the HDCD data encoded in the regular PCM 16bit data. The 24bit FLAC files and the 16bit FLAC files both seem to work fine but I have been told that my AV5103 does not support 24bit PCM input. The PCM light turns on for 16 bit and 24 bit PCM data from the SB - but I don't know if the 24bit PCM data is being properly processed in my preamp at 24bits or not.
Does this mean:
(a)my DAC really is 24 bit - since a 16bit DAC cannot accept a 24bit signal
(b)my DAC is 16bit and it is effectively resampling a 24bit PCM signal at 16bits and therefore degrading the sound
(c)we cant be sure

Like I said - very few HDCDs in my collection so this is not a major worry but I am interested to know.

My 5103 plays back 96/24 streams perfectly ...and takes the 24-bit output from my SB or TACT processor just fine.

The DAC's and ADC's in the 5103 are all 96/24

dts mimimum spec is 48/24...

I love my dozen or so HDCD rips (at 48/24).

Phil, the squeezebox doesn't digitally ouput 24/96 or does it? I thought only the Transporter digitally outputted 24/96 and not the Duet or SB3.

No not the SB... it can't do 24/96

I mean 26/94 out of the TACT into the Linn... nothing to do with an SB!

24bit and 96kHz sounds good - but Linn told me only 16bit and 44.1kHz. I have never popped the lid on the 5103 to look at the components. I guess back when the 5103 was designed, the components were slightly over specified.

I'll have to have a good listen to work out how well the 44.1kHz and 24bit feeds really work.

Cheers

The 5103 can handle an inbound dts stream and decode into 5.1...so it has to handle 48kHz (also required to connect DAT players)
