I doubt whether my approach will help you at all, but here it is -
I wrote an extensible application using java/tomcat to control my home. The
system monitors and controls serial devices in addition to web-based
devices. Classes exist to normalize the interfaces between physical devices
and the system (i.e. I can control Audiotrons and Slim devices with the same
interface, same goes for Lutron and X10 lighting systems). The Slim (and
soon the Audiotron) devices implement the Audio, Speech and Display
interfaces. The Speech interface is implemented using the FreeTTS package
available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/freetts/ Wav files are
generated and placed on a server that the Slim device can get to. The
command:
http://slimserver:9000/status.txt?p0=playlist&p1=play&p2=filename.wav is
then executed.

This should speak, but the short-files bug causes it to thump instead.

If you are trying to do home automation, I'm planning on opensourcing what
I've written (it also controls thermostats, handles a local weather station,
reads card-key access devices, controls relays, monitors phone usage,
monitors voicemail, sends email, etc.)

I think for what you are trying to do, what I've done won't help. I think
you may be able to play a game with convert.conf to call a script which in
turn generates a sound file with tag info from the file you are trying to
play, which in turn calls soxmix to add the text to the front of your music
file...

Hi Michael,

I was the person who though text-to-speech would be an excellent
addition to SB not just for fortunate people, but for people who have
limited sight or no sight at all.

Could you please explain your steps to me (or the list) how you got this
working as I would really like to try this.

Thanks

So, is there a way to trick lame into doing the right thing?
I can probably pad the voice with a bit of extra white-sound.
The inability to play short files does seem like a bug though.
Thanks again - Mikes
