View Full Version : 7.0.1 does not scan library at all

When upgrading from 7.0.0 to 7.0.1 (Intel Mac Mini, OS 10.4.x), I had the following experience and would be grateful for any advice.

Following the upgrade I was able to view my library as normal.

I added a single album and requested a "new and changed" scan. Unusually I did not hear any significant disk access and the operation appeared to complete very quickly. Looking at "New Music" the new album was not visible.

I have had a situation in the past where after an upgrade I have to clear and rescan the entire library. This is not trivial for me as it takes a while. So I tried that. The library duly vanished.

Unfortunately it did not reappear. No major disk accesses this time either, which is not feasible as the library is large and takes 30+ minutes to scan normally. It appeared to complete in a minute or two, and had discovered only 19 albums from the library. However I could see everything by selecting "Music Folder" so permissions etc were not the issue (and anyway 7.0.0 could see everything).

To get back on the air quickly, I simply decided to downgrade back to 7.0.0. This did the trick: I still had to do a complete rescan (it started it automatically) and it appears to have found everything including the new album.

I would hazard a guess that the scanner doesn't like something fairly common in my library - maybe certain characters in a file- or foldername or something - and this causes the scanner to fail more or less immediately. It is apparently a problem introduced between 7.0.0 and 7.0.1.

In the old days when this was just my home music system I used to live on the edge and run nightlies all the time, where occurrences like this were simply a matter (usually) of waiting a day or two for the nightly that fixed somebody's inadvertent slip of the finger, inevitable in a complex system. However now I am using the system professionally most days of the week and rely on it to do what I expect, I have played safe and only installed official release versions. I was thus rather surprised to see that something apparently of this level of criticality has occurred in a release version (I say "apparently" because it is of course likely that this is a problem more or less unique to my setup).

I couldn't immediately find anyone reporting this issue - anyone got any info or suggestions on this? Thanks!

Octavian, am I right in thinking that in your case the scanning never stops, while in my case it stops IMMEDIATELY? In both cases the scan finds very few items.

Is yours still looking? Mine isn't: it gives up almost at once.

Could you please upload scanner.log and server.log?

I'll have to reinstall the application, which I will attempt to do tonight, though it may be tomorrow night before I am able to get to it. I haven't had the opportunity for a few days as the system has been in use.

Are we aware of any circumstances in which I need to do a complete clean install when upgrading from 7.0.0 to 7.0.1? I would have thought not...

Thanks,

I've run into similar problems with my setup which is the same as yours. A few suggestions. Uninstall all Slimserver software by right clicking the icon in System Preferences. Then search the Mac hard drive using the search box to see if any residual files remain. Run a program such as Onyx ( free download from Cnet or Version Tracker ) and run the Automation program. Be sure you have checked all the clean cache options. Be sure your firewall is set to accept all internet traffic. You can access that from the System Preferences pane. select Sharing then Firewall. Read the options carefully as it seems a bit confusing to me. Then download and install 7.0.1. Be sure the path to your music/library is correct. I've tripped over that one a few times. Good luck.

I still don't get why people are seeing an issue with _slimserver_ paths, unless they've upgraded. Did you try removing that folder manually and restart SC?

Yes, I actually tried deleting the entire parent folder. EXACTLY the same result. There is also a SqueezeCenter folder in the same parent folder, BTW.

By the way I also notice that my earlier comment, "...Octavian, am I right in thinking that in your case the scanning never stops, while in my case it stops IMMEDIATELY?" is incorrect.

My system is also, in fact, scanning indefinitely. Under 7.0.0, viewing the Scanner Progress pane shows me the scanning process going through several tens of thousands of iterations, which it ultimately completes (I presume this is some kind of representation of the number of items in the music folder). Under 7.0.1 it says it has 749 iterations to go, and never completes the first of them. One filename shows up as the last one scanned and stays there. That file name doesn't look particularly odd, though it has both square and regular brackets in it.

I performed a clean install having done the steps indicated elsewhere in the Forums (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46470&highlight=macintosh+clean+install)

Now the scan does not seem to happen at all.

Something appears to be seriously wrong here.

We don't have any code which does create that folder in SC7. I've searched through all of our code base and the only instances of "SlimServer" I can find are either documentation, copyright notices or two lines in the Mac installer _removing_ some folders with this name in it. Did you really remove the above folder?

Well, for what it's worth, the scanner.log file from the scan that 7.0.0 just did, completely successfully, has EXACTLY the same kind of entries in it - just 400,000 more of them.

And yes I did SPECIFICALLY remove that folder. I saw the entry and tried again having deliberately removed it. No effect.

I would also note that whatever is going on here, it's trying to DELETE that directory, not create it. Is it a routine designed to migrate from 6.x to 7.x?

However... This folder appears to have nothing to do with the issue at hand. Let's move on.

I'm on an x86 (hacked) Mac Leopard installation. It was all running fine til a few days ago. Odd—I did a rescan before leaving for a week, then shut it down. Shortly after I added more music, hit "rescan" and got the same result as everyone else (that ~/Library/Cache/Slimserver/templates issue, as well as the Unix.pm issue). I confirmed the validity of my perl installation: all OK, cleared the cache noted above, etc., still no workee. I even tried moving to the current nightly build, but same prob.

It's good to hear that an earlier version of SqueezeCenter (7.0?) works OK and doesn't have this issue. Can someone offer me a URL for that version, as I didn't bother to archive the installer file.

Thanks!

Looks like you can find 7.0.0 here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SqueezeCenter_v7.0.0/

I'm a little surprised we haven't heard more on this issue. It's not trivial, it's fatal - it means you cannot run the current release version or anything thereafter, on an entire platform.

Usually the community here is really fast and helpful especially on big issues. But this time hardly a peep... Is it difficult to replicate? Is there anything additional in the way of info that we can provide to help?

I just want to add:
Like the rest here (as far as I can deduct) versions 7.01 -> 7.1 wont scan my music library. I have done THOROUGH searching and deletions of ALL SC files/folders and many times. I have restarted the mac and permissions repair (to be safe) - reinstalled - all numerous times. I even swapped RAM to known good modules. The OS is upgraded to the very latest (and greatest) 10.5.3.
SC 7.0 works like a charm. 7.01 stops when scanning the very 1st folder (I have tried with that folder removed to exclude the possibility of something corrupt or character incompatibility) saying Scanning complete or finnished. Always this exact same result using 7.01.
7.1 seems to be 1 small step forward as I can read this after completed scanning:
Home > Scanning Progress
This page shows the progress of each phase of the scanning process.
iTunes Import (17257 of 17257) Complete 00:01:30
iTunes Playlist Import (21 of 21) Complete 00:00:05

Database Cleanup #2 Complete 00:00:00

I have a library of 700 TB FLACs residing in a top folder of a 1 TB WD hard drive in the second bay of my Powermac Dual G5 2.0 GHz. The system lies on a 75GB WD Raptor. 8 GB RAM. SC installed for "This user".
If I return to SC 7.0 everything works w/o a hitch every time I've done that. Something's clearly been broken since the "progress" from 7.0...
The problem has been reported to customer support and subject of some msg-exchanges.

relen

Hmmm.... It might be worth noting that the vast majority of my library is also FLAC files. Is this significant? About 550GB on a 1TB Firewire external drive with a second drive as a backup.

I would say that, unusually for a release version, this is very borked. I don't think I have ever had a release version with a show-stopper bug before that lasted more than overnight before someone kindly addressed it in a nightly and fixed it.

How can we better help someone address this?

So what are these "simple tests". Earlier in this thread you've asked for log/scanner files and as far as I can see they've been uploaded???
One thing to point out which might be a lead: SC 7.0 always works fine - subsequent versions fail!

Remove Library/Cache/SqueezeCenter before installing 7.0.1. I might have mixed two related threads. In the meantime someone mentioned in the other thread, that it didn't help :-(.

I've now opened a bug against this issue. Please provide any information you can (OS version, music path, installation mode single user/all users, start at boot/logon etc.) to this bug report:

Happened to me as well. Tried deleting everything and doing a new install to no avail. What did work for me was doing a fresh install onto my D:\ drive rather than the C:\ drive previously used. Complete scan worked perfectly and re-scans are also OK. Not sure if there is a clue in there as to where the problem lies but may be food for thought. This is a Dell Dimension 8250 XP running only SC and Weather Display software with all FLAC music on a ReadyNAS NV.

Same thing happened to me on a HP machine dedicated to SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 with XP SP2.

Scanning stopped without explanation.

I uninstalled and reinstalled to the same location and scanning resumed.

As far as I can deduct these are the files installed by SC Installer (installed for "This user" (in my case "myself":
/Users/myself/Library/Application\Support/SqueezeCenter
/Users/myself/Library/Caches/SqueezeCenter/
/Users/myself/Library/Logs/SqueezeCenter/
/Users/myself/Library/PreferencePanes
ALL these have been deleted prior to reinstalls!

(I don't know how many times I've given out ALL thinkable (& more to be safe) detail of my setup and every time it's like beginning from zero. But I'm used by now to customer supports (or IT-supports) shooting from the hip: "Restart" and copying/pasting elementary error detecting schemes and clearly have not read thru the msg, wasting both mine and their time - I will this time once again post this info at bugzilla. We have to nail this bug asap!)

It's top of my list and I'm working on it right now. I have an idea what could be the cause of the issue. But as I still can't reproduce the issue, I don't know whether my "solution" will fix this. Would be great if some of you could help me test this. I'll have a change ready for tomorrow's build.

All - I've uploaded a new OSX build of 7.0.2:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/7.0/SqueezeCenter-7.0.2-20533.dmg

This build is addressing a potential issue with checking for aliases on OSX (one of the biggest changes in 7.0.1). While I've still not been able to reproduce the crasher, I hope this could fix your issues.

Please test and report back. Thanks!

... there is just one small thing with this new version. I have two Itunes libraries (that means two folders with two different library xml-filmes. You can create and switch between them by holding the option key when starting itunes).

Library I: complete collection of my music on a time capsule. Library II: copies of some of that music on the harddisk of my macbook pro for when I'm on the road. Clearly, I need SC to scan only library I.

That worked perfect so far. I only had to point SC to library I in the SC settings. But with the new nightly build (the one that solved our scanning problems), SC seems to pick up all the libraries or XML-files he can find. Result: he always includes library II in his scan. So now every album with a duplicate in the library II is doubled in the music-lists in SC. No matter what I put in the "Tunes Music Library.xml Location"-field, somehow it doesnt exclude the other libraries/folders anymore.

Its not all that dramatic, but a bug nevertheless..
(using 7.0.2-20583 on OSX 10.5.3,"use Itunes" is checked)

I'm not sure. If iTunes is using aliases to do its tricks, then SC is just following them. If your method was working before, then this was thanks to alias parsing being broken...

Hi Guys,
newbie here with the Squeezebox Duet, had a Roku 1000 before and thought of a Sonos but settled for the Duet.
Did a clean install of the SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 on my MacBook Pro, which runs minimized.
I pointed it to my single iTunes music folder, initiated a manual scan and all seemed fine.
After a few days of library additions, I noticed new albums are not displayed by the remote.

Re checked the SqueezeCenter which is set for "Look for new & changed music".

Did a 10 minute manual rescan of the whole library, then I could see
everything on the remote controller.

I added more albums, same story, SqueezeCenter never auto updates the library!

tried mailing support via the Support page from 2 computers/browsers, no go: Server error.
SqueezeCenter updates, the remote tells me I am up to date with ver 7.0.1.
I feel I have done everything I can,for something that should work out of the box.....
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I thought I had posted the link, but it was only a link to an older build. You'll find the latest nightly build here:

You can't update the server through the remote. You'll have to install it on your server machine.

That's the big difference to us: it's going upwards. I have a more than four year old SliMP3 still playing at home. SC7 added the ability to play Pandora etc. on it - services which didn't even exist when the player was built.

Also I have been experiencing some scanning problems recently ..

It started with SC 7.0.0.
I realised new tracks were not added, so I started a complete rescan and after 2K tracks it stops. I upgraded to 7.0.1, same problem. I unistalled and re-intalled 7.0.1 and it still stops in after a few tracks. My library is 43K tracks and it used to work fine all the time.

Michael,
thanks for the link,Updated it on top of 7.0.1, at the end it still reported as being version 7.0.1.
I deleted all files and did a clean install,SC in System Preferences shows 7.0.1 but the Web display status says 7.0.2 - 20990 so, maybe the update was also OK, just didn't think of looking at the Status menu.
I initiated a library scan as everything was empty, 20 min/12000 songs later everything seemed up to date, so I added one CD into iTunes.
Left all default settings, (Look for new and changed music changes and 3600 sec iTunes reload interval) and waited over an hour.
Nothing happened, the new album does not come up under artist, album or any other menu.
Squeezecenter 7.0.2 does not automatically update my library as I understood and expected.
I am not sure what next now or even how is it supposed to work.
Are there any other options requiring specific settings, thanks for any further help.

> I pointed it to my single iTunes music folder,

Where did you do that - in the iTunes prefs or as the music folder? If you're running SC on the same machine as iTunes, don't set neither music path nor path to the iTunes xml file. But make sure iTunes integration is enabled. SC should find your iTunes file automatically.

If this still doesn't work, set logging (Settings/Advanced/Logging) for plugin.itunes to debug, do some change in iTunes and watch the scanner.log file. Please upload the last few hundred lines to this thread (as a text file).

Michael,
thanks for not giving up on this, I am sure there is a way out.
I selected the iTunes towards the end of installation as I recall, it prompted to point the path, that was at iTunes folder level.
As soon as I clicked on it (external HD) it seemed busy getting some info, I could not point to any individual file/sub folder in iTunes library folder.
SC runs on the same MacBook Pro as iTunes, just the library is on an external Raid 1 HDD.
SC knows where everything is, it works with manual rescan, somehow, the auto rescan does not trigger the same command.
I tried attaching twice a zip file with all screen dumps, it uploads but I can't see anything in preview, not sure the attachments work, if not, please drom me an email where I can send them to.
Thanks again.

Ah, glad I searched before posting...

Also using a mac mini as server, and had no problems with 7.0, but as soon as I upgraded to 7.0.1 could no longer get the scanner to add music or do a complete re-scan, errors such as (scanner.log):

Anyway, I shall try upgrading to the 7.0.2 (thanks for the link Michael) and if that doesn't work will try a clean install, and if that doesn't work will revert back to 7.0 and await the next build.

Will report my results later.

OK I removed all SC files (as per the FAQ), rebooted and then reinstalled 7.0. All is good again.

Then I finally tracked down a 7.0.2 .dmg, specifically from http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/SqueezeCenter_7.0_v2008-06-23/

I installed this over my 7.0, and did a "scan for new/changed music". Unfortunately I see the same errors as with other post 7.0 versions:

[08-06-29 18:47:37.9668] main::main (211) Error: Failed when running main scan: [spec is not a valid file specification at /Library/PreferencePanes/SqueezeCenter.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Utils/Misc.pm line 416.

[08-06-29 18:47:37.9906] main::main (212) Error: Skipping post-process & Not updating lastRescanTime!

Is this a different bug* to the once fixed by Michael, should I enter a bug report? Incidentally, my music is stored on a NAS (mount tells me //christopher@edmini:139/audio on /Volumes/audio (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by christopher)).

In the meantime, back to 7.0

Folks

I am running Squeeze Centre on a Windows Home Server and I have also lost the ability to scan under 7.0.1. When I click to rescan the screen immediately reports that the scan has been done, even though it hasn't. The is no detail available on previous scans or info on the progress of a current scan. I have just uninstalled 7.0.1 and installed 7.0. this has kicked off a rescan that seems to be proceeding normally (I can see progress on the status tab). From what I could see of the old log file the scan was not being initiated (the scan log did not change). Once I have confirmed that things are back to normal with 7.0 I will try 7.0.1 again and see if the problem recurs. If it might be significant I am running the Weather Time, Live Departures, Lazy Search and InguzEQ plugins.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Guys,
pretty quiet on the library rescan front, this function is far too important to give up and it's hard to imagine how it was overlooked in 7.01,7.02 and perhaps in 7.1 if no one would have said anything.
It will become a hot topic for me in about a week when I get all my stuff from the UK here at home in Oz and set it all up.
Would appreciate any help on the topic.
Many thanks.

Hmm, glad I found this thread.

Been driving me mad recently and I was becoming convinced it was something I was/wasn't doing.

Anyway, I'm running my 7.0.1 server on an XP Home machine

Just come back off holiday to find that this issue still seems to exist (but there seems to have been some excellent progress on iPeng, so things are not all bad).

This does not seem to be the same bug as http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8360 that Michael quoted at the beginning of this thread, and this issue seems to be multi-platform.

Should I open a bug report? I've looked and there doesn't seem to be anything open that coves this. I'd have to wait until Friday when I'm off to find the time to reinstall/regenerate the log files...

chrisinparis,
I think you are right about a crossplatform issue and you also seem experienced in dealing with bug reports.

To me, it's sadly a too common scenario I have been often through:
get a new toy, does not work 100%,the developers do not acknowledge it, then waste days surfing forums,FAQ's, Knwoledge base, etc. while doubting myself.

Hell, shouldn't these things work out of the box?
My old Roku 1000 did, it was soft upgrades screwig it up after, and how did the Roku update the library, coz, there was nothing to set, and new music was always available instantly.
It must have been monitoring constantly my iTunes folder. If it had an RF remote with display, I may have stuck with it.

Back to the Squeezebox Duet, I am not sure of the bug extent, some reported scanning stops after 2000 albums, I think one guy was saying his scanning does not stop....

My setup (MacBook Pro-Tiger 10.4, iTunes) had some 1400 albums containing some 11000 tracks, automatic rescan never worked, I set it to 1 hour and watched, nothing was happening. Manual rescan always worked.
Now at home, will have some 3000CD's to enter in the library, will that bring up more problems I wonder.
Regards

I've contacted support via e-mail:

"The reference number for your question is '080728-000843'.
You should receive a response by email from our support department within the next business day."

To be honest this is the first real issue I've ever had with my beloved squeezebox setup - the best gadget I've had in a very very long time (even better to me than the iPhone!).

chrisinparis,
well done mate, I agree the Squeezebox Duet should be the best useable gadget around.
As I mentioned I used a Roku M1000 and was great, software updates screwed it up, displays were no longer correct and the main issue was the Analog audio out would not always work, music was playing according to the display but no audio, had to keep reboting the unit and then it worked.

Next step for me was the Sonos, but it is a bit long in the tooth and rumors about the newer versions did not sound that good, it was claimed they dropped the second audio out connections and I need that: optical to my home theatre pre amp and analog for the outdoor area on the other side of the wall, hence the importance of the 2 way RF remote with the display (Roku was simple 1 way IR type.
The SB Duet seemed to fit my requirements 100%, and allow easy expansion.
Let's see what the response will be.
Best regards.

Hi there, do you mean 700GB ?

I have a library of 700 TB FLACs residing in a top folder of a 1 TB WD hard drive

Got a reply with a business day (as advertised), been escalated to level 2 support, someone should contact me shortly.

- my specific issue DOES just seem to be a mac issue going by the error message I see (points to an error at line 416 of Misc.pm - this line is in the middle of a code block called 'sub isMacAlias')

- scanning works if I only try to scan a small subset of my library, but go over a certain number of tracks or whatever and it fails

- I mistakenly contacted support instead of a submitting a bug report last week; haven't heard form support since last Thursday, so I have finally submitted a bug report:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9040

I was plagued by the fail-scan bug which later was corrected. Then for a while everything was dandy until again scanning failed. SC locked up and I couldn't get a scan no more. Finally I found the drive (1 TB Hitachi mounted in the 2nd drive bay of my Dual G5) had been corrupted (NB: not blaming SC for this). The corruption didn't show at a shallow glance. The drive mounted fine in MacOS displaying all its content in full glory but testing (Apple DU, Techtools, Disk Warrior and Drive Genius!) showed an irrepairable corruption. Neither could fix the drive. I sent the drive back to Hitachi and I just got word a replacement has been shipped.
Luckily I had my whole library of flacs backed up :-) Bottom line: Look for datacorruption and causes beyond SC "bugs".

chrisinparis,
thanks for proceeding with the bug report, this thread seems to have died, a few initial ideas but now everyone's gone.
It is clear people have different problems, for me SC never rescans, there is no corrupt drive or such because a manually initiated scan does scan the whole library without problems.
Not sure how this will be fixed as the loss of auto rescan seems to have crept in after v 7.0.
Next week I will get around installing the system and try v7.1
Regards.

I've been having trouble with 7.1 rescanning. It just seems to rescan forever and never finishes. This is after the software/firmware upgrade. Just not working to get any of the playlists from iTunes and my playlists just show as empty. Thank goodness I can still browse my drive but I'd like to be able to get the scanner working? Any ideas? I've noticed that there is a scanner.exe file in my processes list when I check the Task Manager. Is this related to SC 7.1? Sometimes it takes a chunk of memory, even up to 750 mb of RAM.

I am also experiencing the issue with library scanning coming back with all zeroes.

Platform: Vista Home Premium
Library: Network share (z:\mp3) resides on a MyBook World Edition 1TB.

Scanner.log *always* remains 0kb even though I see the scanner.exe process running and taking a substantial amount of memory.

Have tried uninstall/reinstall several times with duplicate results, as well as disabling virus scan (Avast!) and ensuring windows firewall is has exceptions for 9092 (for MySQL) and 9000 for remote connections.

Ideas? Advice? Recommendations? Liquor? Drop back and punt?

Phaedra, agreed there seem to be a few different issues with scanning. For me, on mac only, something broke between 7.0 and 7.0.1

- scanning my entire library, triggered by the wizard or manually any time afterwards, results in an empty library
- scanning smaller sections of my library works

I have no issues on windows or linux.

I certainly don't have corrupt data. Permissions on the drive are fine as I can access the music directly using WMP or winamp or vlc or whatever. Its just the rescan that appears to do absolutely nothing but take up disk and CPU cycles.

If only the horsepower on the MBWE was better, I'd just run it from there. Unfortunately it turns the little drive into a pile of mud.

Until this is addressed by Slimdevices, my Squeezebox2 sits worthless to me as a music player for my substantial collection.

silverarrows and seedoubleyou,

I have no issues with initial scanning in Windows (XP, service pack 3 installed). I have not tried adding something to the library and then scanning for "new and updated music".

You should contact support, or if you're sure there's a bug, open a bug report.

On my last contact with support, they suggested a few things to try:
1. Do a clean install (as per the FAQ - look for the instructions specific to your flavour of Windows).
2. Try scanning a folder that has only one or two albums in it. Does this work? If so, then there may be an issue with scanning large quantities of files (seems to be my problem). If not, then bug report or support time.
3. If scanning did work, try to find out if there are certain files that pose problem - split your library in half (A-M, N-Z) and scan each part separately. If scanning works for one half, but not the other, split the problematic half again and try again - until you find the problematic letter/artist/album/songs. Then bug report or support time.

You can see the last set of steps I performed by checking out bug report 9040 - http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9040

Whilst waiting for a fix, I'm using my backup (slow but works) linux server (SC 7.1), and will probably revert my mac server back to 7.0 (this version works fine for me) for better performance.

HTH

p.s. this the first real issue I've ever had with Slim Server / SqueezeCenter; I've had my squeezebox for over a year now.
p.p.s I remember reading issues on Windows with some anti-virus software - you'll have to check the forums for more info.

This bug report looks relevant to problems with the scanner on Windows:

(MP3 file causes the Scanner to crash.)

Guys - I'm sorry this thread dropped of my radar :-(. I've been trying to follow up now on bug 9040. Please note that the case covered in that bug is purely OSX related, as that code isn't executed on any other platform (Alias detection).

If you're on a different platform and have a reproducible case of SC failing to scan a file/folder, please file a bug with as much detail as you can get: Version numbers, operating system, music path configuration, scanner.log with all scan.* debugging enabled etc. Thanks!

If you are able to reliably crash the scan as described in that bug, could you please give my patch a try? Thanks!

I eventually found that Avast had falsely quarantined scanner.exe. It took me a while to find out as Avast was running on my server and it does not seem to issue any notification when it takes this sort of action :-(.

So this weekend I loaded Ubuntu 8.0.4 and Squeezecenter on my laptop, the same laptop that was running Squeezecenter on Vista (luckily I had a spare HD kicking around).

I used smbfs to attach to the MyBookWorld Edition where all my music resided, and *poof* all my music is detected and it worked like a champ! One thing did jump out at me though, and this is what lead me to the fix for my Windows install. When using Gnome's 'connect to server' option, which is the Gnome version of mapping a network drive, I noticed that while all my folders were on the share, all the files weren't! I toggled the Nautilus/Gnome option to 'view hidden files' and *poof* all my files showed up! Because Squeezecenter used the smbfs mounted share, not the Gnome/Nautilus mapping, it worked like a champ.

On a hunch, I put the Vista HD back in the laptop and booted it up to look at the file attributes. There it was, the hidden attribute was set! I unchecked this attribute for one folder. Told Squeezecenter in windows to use just this folder for the library, issued a manual rescan and it worked!

Now to figure out how to chmod -h all these files on the MBWE...

Please do what you can to share this information with others as it is noteworthy! Squeezecenter will NOT read files with the 'hidden' attribute set!

I tested Michael's patch, and it solves the problem I was having on MacOS. Michael has committed the patch, so it will be in 7.2 when it comes out (and in the nightlies from now on until then).
