I've got 2 high resolution Nine Inch Nails albums.
They don't playback nice with my SB3, I get the basic song, but bits of nasty noise thrown in. They play fine on my PC. Any clues? Should I convert to WAV and play them, or does the SB3 not deal with 24bit/96khz files?

Cheers

No it can't handle that. You need to downsample them. What format are they in ? (wav?, Flac?)

The SB3 can sometimes handle 24/96kHz material by throwing away every other sample, effectively giving you a resolution of 24/48kHz. But the SB3 CPU often chokes on the large amount of data in a 24/96 file. The best way to counter this is to downsample the file in a WAV editor and save it as 24/48 WAV, then compress to FLAC.

Use a free tool such as Audacity to properly resample down to 48 Khz. The command-line tool, sox, can do this as well. The files will have to be in one of the supported formats to begin with however, (hopefully FLAC,) as these tools do not support a lot of formats.

I have the files as FLAC, so I need to convert to wav's, then down sample to 24/48, then back to flac.

Good job its what weekends were made for!

Wouldn't it be easier to just download the free 16-bit flac files from the NIN website? They are already sampled correctly and sound just fine on my SBR.

Foobar will downsample flac -> flac, takes about 5 minutes.

I believe Foobar uses the Secret Rabbit resampler, which is one of the best.

for Linux users, the easiest method I've found is to:

1) de-flac the files using the flac command-line frontend (http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation_tools_flac.html, Debian/Ubuntu package "flac").

2) use the sndfile-resample frontend for the Secret Rabbit Code (aka samplerate) converter (http://www.mega-nerd.com/SRC/, Debian/Ubuntu packages "samplerate-programs" and "libsamplerate")

both tools are batch-friendly.
