I have taken the plunge again and installed Fedora 8.

There doesn't seem to be explicit instructions for installing MIP.

Here is what Predixis says -
"Download and extract the distribution. To run the program, use the MusicMagicMixer command."

huh?

Any help would be d'lovely.

Open a shell and type "MusicMagicMixer". This should bring it up.

Michael,

Here's a paste of the session -

[root@boxOwires ~]# cd Download/Predixis/MusicMagicMixer

[root@boxOwires MusicMagicMixer]# dir
ConnectionManager1.xml mm.jar moods MusicMagicService
ContentDirectory1.xml mmm.ini MusicMagicMixer notes.txt
lib mmserver MusicMagicServer server

[root@boxOwires MusicMagicMixer]# MusicMagicMixer
bash: MusicMagicMixer: command not found
[root@boxOwires MusicMagicMixer]#

For security reasons files in the local directory aren't executed for root. You'll have to indicate the path, either full path or ./ for local folder:

../MusicMagicMixer

should do. Or doubleclick from whatever file manager you're using.

ok...

[root@boxOwires MusicMagicMixer]# ./MusicMagicMixer
JAVA_HOME is not set. ./MusicMagicMixer cannot start.

What now?

So, you need to install Java (if you haven't done so already).

Thanks Robin,

I'll spend some time poking around and reading how-to's for Linux in order to spare you guys the endless beginner questions that I have.

There are however, a couple things perhaps you can help with.

1. Fedora 8 - what is the equivalent folder for Windows "Program Files"?

2. Terminal window - I'm learning that this is where it all happens, how can I put a shortcut on my desktop? I tried "Add this launcher to desktop" under System tools but the link does not bring up the terminal.

From my experience, moving to Linux takes a lot of personal googletime. But to start you off, take a look at:

I find this even easier if I set a keyboard shortcut:
System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Desktop section -> "run a terminal" (I set it to F12)

Cheers,
Geoff
