View Full Version : Will a duet work?

Hello all,

I tend towards the SB type open source model, I like it. The Sonos looks attractive but I'm not sure I need to spend that $, plus the plugins for the SB definitey looking appealing. After reading a bunch of the forum today I have a few questions before I pull the trigger on a Duet.

1) I have a large house. If I have 4-5 receivers running will streamed music be synchronized across multiple rooms? (useful for party hosting situations) I've seen numerous answers on this and would like one definite answer. The things I can see streaming are local mp3s/FLAC, Shoutcast internet radio streams, and sirius radio (canada). From what I gather it may be able to have some types of streams synced and others not? Obviously some rooms will be able to hear the music from other rooms so synchronization is VERY important.

2) How many different streams can be going at once? Is the limit simply bandwidth? How is what is playing on each receiver set? Does the remote know about each receiver and you set the music on each that way?

3) I've seen hints that it cannot stream Sirius Canada streams, this would be a shame. True?

4) Any chance the remote headphone jack will be usable one day? It would be handy to toss the remote in my jacket and use it while out working in the yard. Or line out from the remote into a portable "boom box" that I could place at rendom locations where-ever I was.

Thanks for any advice. I'm excited to order one once I finish my research. I'm conversant in perl among other things so I'm also looking forward to poking around at some development :)

Cheers

Welcome to the forums,

Hello all,

1) I have a large house. If I have 4-5 receivers running will
streamed music be synchronized across multiple rooms? (useful for
party hosting situations) I've seen numerous answers on this and would
like one definite answer. The things I can see streaming are local
mp3s/FLAC, Shoutcast internet radio streams, and sirius radio
(canada). From what I gather it may be able to have some types of
streams synced and others not? Obviously some rooms will be able to
hear the music from other rooms so synchronization is VERY important.

andyg, who is a slimdevices developer/employee posted this definitive
breakdown in synchronization capabilities.

Edit: I realize it might not be that definitive. Please ask if you have more questions on this.

SC7 SN (new datacenters)

MP3 radio Yes No
WMA radio No No
Pandora Yes Yes
Slacker Yes Yes
MP3tunes Yes Yes
Rhapsody Yes (up to 3) Yes (up to 3)
LMA Yes Yes

so there you have it. The Rhapsody limitation is not a technical one,
but rather due to licensing afaik.

2) How many different streams can be going at once? Is the limit
simply bandwidth? How is what is playing on each receiver set? Does
the remote know about each receiver and you set the music on each that
way?

The (bandwidth)sky is the limit :) The Controller controls one player
at the time (unless they are synced). One explicetly chooses "a
current player" to control. The Controller connects to Squeezecenter or SqueezeNetwork, which in turn know about each player/receiver.

3) I've seen hints that it cannot stream Sirius Canada streams, this
would be a shame. True?

I don't know, but this page indicates you can (I only skimmed):
http://gregbrown.net/squeeze/sirius.htm

4) Any chance the remote headphone jack will be usable one day? It
would be handy to toss the remote in my jacket and use it while out
working in the yard. Or line out from the remote into a portable
"boom box" that I could place at rendom locations where-ever I was.

afaik there has been no official announcements, but I think it is
likely it will happen at some point. A player application
(squeezeplay) developed in the same framework as the Controller runs
is in the works, so who knows. Also as you noted yourself, it's open
source, so I think at some point someone will cave in and do it. There
is also a cli player called squeezeslave which has been ported/compiled for
the Controller and sort of works. But is is VERY rough atm.

Thanks for any advice. I'm excited to order one once I finish my
research. I'm conversant in perl among other things so I'm also
looking forward to poking around at some development :)

New contributions are always welcomed.

Thanks for all of the answers. So I guess I'd like to ask for two clarifications...if someone could try these (if a definitive answer isn't known) that would be fantastic. Will Sirius radio streamed work in synced? And will shoutcast streams (ChronixRadio to be specific :>) be synced? I'm guessing shoutcast streams are "mp3 radio"?

I guess if NOT, then I can always save the streams ahead of time, convert them to mp3, and then play them (for parties, etc) but that's not really the ideal situation

Thanks

Anyone able to help verify that for me if you know?

We don't officially support Sirius, so I can't give you a definitive answer. There is a plug-in (find it here (http://www.gregbrown.net/squeeze/sirius.htm)), but I've never used it and there wasn't any indication of how it worked from a sync perspective. Plug-ins, of course, require SqueezeCenter to be running somewhere on your network. It does support Sirius Canada.

Shoutcast sync will not be predictable if you don't run SqueezeCenter. If you do run it, you should have no problem.

Hmmm I don't see where he said he didn't want to run a server?

Yeah, got the threads confused. I'll fix that.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.

The fact that Shoutcast can be synchronized makes me feel much better as that will be 1/3 of my use (local mp3s and Sirius being the other 2/3).

I don't know exactly what SqueezeCenter is yet but I'll take a look. I have numerous systems around (windows and linux) so I'm sure I can run anything that needs to be run.

Sorry about letting you hang without answers, but I see you got them now. Also the official word is, as of yesterday I think, that a player is in the works for the Controller, so the headphone jack can be expected to go live at some point :)

Having the remote be capable of headphone output and lineout would be a killer application for this.

Eagerly anticipating.

Thanks for all the answers, I think I'll grab one.
