View Full Version : empty iTunes playlists on Solaris

I need some help. I'm running iTunes 4.2 on MacOS 10.3.2. My iTunes
library is on a Solaris 8 box and gets NFS'ed over to the Mac. I've
run SlimServer 5.1 on the Solaris box, which doesn't run as root but
the SlimServer user has permissions to write in the iTunes directory.
I've selected "Use iTunes" in SlimServer's configuration.

The problem I'm having is that all of my iTunes playlists show up as
"Empty", except for the "iTunes Music" playlist (which is in the "Saved
Playlists" menu). Using this playlist, I am able to find music by
artist and it plays just fine. Also, if you try to browse by artist,
genre or albums, these show up as empty - but it seems like these get
populated as I select and listen to music via "iTunes Music". I've
searched the archives but wasn't able to find similar problems.

One other thing. I'm running Perl 5.8.0. I've turned on a few relevant
looking debug flags; here's the log:

Use of uninitialized value in string eq at Slim/Buttons/BrowseID3.pm

And here's the options I used when starting SlimServer:

Abid,

Please try the latest pre-release software, available here:

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest

And let us know if this resolves your issues. If not, please start the
server with the --d_itunes option turned on and send us the debug
output.

Some definite progress. Now when I browse genres, albums or artists, I
see all of each. But the iTunes playlists still show up empty. Here
are the errors logged. There is no /Network/Servers on this box.

Abid,

Glad to hear that your songs are now appearing in your library. I'm
not sure why your playlists are empty, though.

Can you send me your iTunes Music Library file?

Finally got some time to look at this myself. Problem turned out to be
an invalid path. Everything is working great now.

On my mac, the path I've defined as the path to the iTunes directory is
/Network/Servers/trantor/d/d3/audio/Music/iTunes. The reason for this
is because my iTunes library actually resides on a Solaris box and gets
NFS'ed to my mac. slimserver runs on this same Solaris box and
slimserver was looking for the same path when looking for iTunes
playlists. Problem is that I didn't have this path set up on the
Solaris box. So I did the following:

1. shut down slimserver on the Solaris box (/etc/init.d/slimserver stop)
2. shut down autofs on the Solaris box (/etc/init.d/autofs stop)
3. added "/Network/Servers -hosts -nosuid,nobrowse" to /etc/auto_master
on the Solaris box

Now /Network/Servers/trantor/d/d3/audio/Music/iTunes gets you to the
same place on both my mac and the Solaris box.

4. started autofs on the Solaris box (/etc/init.d/autofs start)
5. started slimserver on the Solaris box (/etc/init.d/slimserver start)
