so with the encouragement of another thread here recently talking about the improvements in synching players I decided to take the plunge and upgrade from 6.5.4 to sc7.

All went well in upgrading the software and all of my plugins. But now I have introduced a whole new can of worms into my system.

my system: Mac G4 running osx 10.4.10. comcast cable modem Buffalo whr-hp-g54 router

sb2- wired
slimp3 - wired into a netgear xe102 homeplug. works consistently.

with 6.5.4 my sb2 worked flawlessly. my slimp3 worked almost flawlessly with the occasional hiccup due to it's lacking a buffer. I could synch the two players but often times the sync would drift.

now with 7.0.1 i have almost continuous sync problems between the two players as well as a new problem- recurring rebuffering in both players even when they are playing in a solo situation-although it seems to occur more on the slimp3 which i would expect.

When the players are synched, I push play and there's a 5-10 second delay until music starts. It then plays for a second or two and then stops for another 5-10 secs and then continues uninterrupted until it hits the end of a song. then the players go through a process of rebuffering, pausing and then usually playing the next song. this process of rebuffering, pausing and then finally playing seems to lesson as i move through a playlist but it doesn't go away. here's what the log shows:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: SqueezeCenter (7.0.1 - 17957)
Connection: keep-alive
Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2008 03:49:28 GMT

frame 6: (eval) (/Library/PreferencePanes/SqueezeCenter.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Utils/Timers.pm line 198)

frame 8: main::idle (./slimserver.pl line 453)
frame 9: main::main (./slimserver.pl line 1005)

when playing from just one player, I also have rebuffering problems. this is something I have almost never experienced with my sb2 before. This is the log from one of the rebuffering hiccups:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: SqueezeCenter (7.0.1 - 17957)
Connection: keep-alive
Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2008 03:45:51 GMT
Content-Length: 298
Content-Type: text/plain

frame 14: (eval) (/Library/PreferencePanes/SqueezeCenter.prefPane/Contents/server/Slim/Networking/Select.pm line 243)
frame 15: Slim::Networking::Select::select (./slimserver.pl line 503)
frame 16: main::idle (./slimserver.pl line 453)
frame 17: main::main (./slimserver.pl line 1005)

so that's a basic lay of the land. any ideas on how to move forward on troubleshooting? thanks in advance. I want to fall in love with the new and improved squeezecenter but at the moment it's driving me crazy.

here's more log results for the single player rebuffering problem:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK

Not sure if this helps but i had a simular problem with all the 7.0 betas i used and found it was the last.fm plugin. I disabled it and now my sb3 and sbr sync perfectly.

thanks for the suggestion. I've disabled the last.fm plugin and now I'll test it out.

a followup...

after disabling the last.fm plugin I've noticed an improvement in my synced slimp3 and sb2. I've also noticed that the original problem continues when I use any dynamic playlist. I think maybe there's a bug with the dynamic playlist plugin which is quite possible since it's in beta stage.

For what it's worth I have been having the same sorts of problems for a couple of weeks now -- song starts up, crunchy noise, rebuffer. I thought it was issues with wireless, but the same thing happened when I switched to a wired connection.

After reading this thread I've disabled last.fm and a few other plug-ins; we'll see how it goes.

I have EXACTLY he same problems with SC7 - Start track, noise, track stops, rebuffer, track continues fine. Also, my 2 players go out of sync and, if I start up SoftSqueeze on my Mac, the whole thing STOPs after about 5 tracks.

I will try disabling plugins but I'm not hopeful about this.

These seem like fundamental problems which should be under a high priority. I could (almost!) put up with the generally slow performance if, at the end of it, the players did their primary function - play music with no problem.

I have serious sync problems and we (slim tech support) have established that the machine I run SC7.0 on does not keep good time. In my case this was identified with the sync.player logging option set to debug, resulting in a constant stream of 'adjust jiffies epoch...'

I have only experienced re-buffering problems when I had problems with wireless connectivity. These were resolved when I replaced the wireless router.

I've just turned ALL logging off to see if it helps. I'll let you know.

Well, it seems to have had some effect. There was a big improvement but still some slippage.

I then set up the 'Synchronizer' Plugin and that has solved it all. I recommend trying this if you're still having problems.

and where did you get it?

Thanks...

It's in:

SqueezeCenter_MultiPlayer_PluginPack_0.1

also, try:

SqueezeCenter_PluginPack_0.2

They're not bad!

You can find them at:

I downloaded the 14th May nightly update and it seemed to be extremely well behaved. I noticed today that a 'final' release has been posted on Slimdevices for the ReadyNas and I've just installed that, along with the plugin pack and the Multi-player plugin pack (both of which have been impressive so far but I would advise turning off the ones you don't need).

For the first time in ages (based on the 14th May version) I'm quite optimistic here. It feels like a lot has been done and I'll report my findings back.

The only downer is that I now have to wait several hours for the initial library scan to complete before I can really try it out but the radio stations are working fine and the synchronization seems good.

More later....

The latest version on SqueezeCenter for ReadyNAS has now been running all weekend and is a significant improvement on all previous verions in many respects. There are still problems but I'll summarize them here:

Stuttering - I've not had any stuttering/rebuffering problems with this at all. A BIG bonus and very welcome.
Network disconnection - One of my Squeezeboxes DID suddenly disconnect and I had to connect it via wireless instead of ethernet. This really needs to be addressed.
Playlist build - this really hasn't changed at all. There is no sign of any improvement. Just make sure you have some wet paint nearby to watch dry.
Sound quality - no problems with that. It doesn't seem to have any problems with my AAC-based library, either

Overall, well done but still not perfect. PLEASE get this performance issue sorted for Release 7.1 (or even 8).
